Still great until mid season 10. It just kills the character development they built up and has a loss in constant stellar writing.

I think it was season 17 that had the one where Grandpa becomes a matador. I think - out of all the episodes - is the worst, and had me practically writhing on my couch over how bad it was.

It starts to flip around season 24, but the teens were dark years

Agreed with you until you went and acted like a moron with this. Season 7 has an almost perfect melding of the cartoony seasons that 5 and 6 were with the more grounded stories of the seasons before.

The Principal and the Pauper
The Simpsons: Season 9, Episode 2

The Simpsons really peaks around seasons 5-6. 7-9 are just a decent sitcom. Some of the jokes are genius but the only reason the lines are revered is nostalgia and lack of competition.

Femputer posted...

Nevermind, TC has no taste.

Homerpalooza is a big turning point. Some great jokes, but the premise is just trash.
Summer of 4 Ft. 2 is great character building, but really pushing the "cool" theme too hard.

Marge vs. the Monorail is season 4...

Homerpalooza was generally considered the worst episode until Principal and the Pauper came out.

The episode is fine, but it did kind of come off as "fellow kids"-ing with having as many music artist guests as they could get.

I would only agree on Homerpalooza being bad tbh all jokes aside, your thesis of season 8 being a massive step down is correct but then you went a bridge too far into cartoony maniac zone.

I dont really see why people hate Marge Be Not Proud so much tbh its got some great jokes Ill admit it nearly veers into the smaltzyness that plagues the later seasons but I think it sticks the landing.

The Simpsons had good episodes up to like season 18. You can argue that it wasn't "prime" Simpsons, but there were still pretty good episodes even with the shifting characterisation and the more fanciful plots. I really like the truck-driving episode and the episode where Bart goes to a Catholic school, though I have issues with how Marge basically fuelled Bart's impulsiveness and took him off a good path where he was paying attention in school and being a good kid because she was worried they wouldn't go to the same heaven. Two of my favorite Treehouse of Horror segments are the ones where Homer gets a magic hammock that clones him when he uses it, and where the family get a mega-AI house with an AI voiced by Pierce Brosnan.

I think this talking point of "the Simpsons were only good up to season 9" stems from a fanbase embittered by time, as well as a core difference in global demographic. In America, that was roughly the period of time where "Simpsonmania" was going on, but that was more of an American thing - Australia and Britain didn't have that wave of merchandise and popularity, at least not on the same level. The show didn't even start airing in those places for a couple years after it had started in America to my understanding. And regarding age - I was born in 1995. The Simpsons were already on season six when I came into the world. While I saw reruns every day, I also watched new episodes of the Simpsons until I was like 16 or so, and I explicitly grew up with the show up to season 18 where an episode called Boys of Bummer kinda spoiled the magic and turned me off the show.

This whole "The Simpsons was only good up until this particular point and was never good again" argument is dumb imo, but I think that cut-off date is going to vary for everyone. If you're older, there's gonna be a schism when the show switches to digital animation and moves onto their third writing staff, where Homer becomes more self-centred and rude. If you're younger, your Simpsons experience is going to be informed by what you watch as you grow up. Later Simpsons isn't great most of the time, but there are still really good episodes and I can't take that argument point of the show "only" being good up to some single-digit season seriously.

It's like people who legitimately get pissed off with Lisa because "she's always painted as being in the right" and "the writers are obsessed with making her the main character" - like yeah, she's written as a precocious know-it-all. That's her character. And sometimes she gets episodes where as the main focus, she has to face a moral or ethical dilemma. Not all criticism is bunk, but there really is some pathological anger that some chud-ass motherfuckers legitimately have over a fictional 8 year old girl.

There's something weird and stupid about people who go all-out emotionally on discussing the "rise and fall" of the Simpsons. You can try and pinpoint an objective moment where the series stopped being good, but that's gonna vary from person to person and it genuinely isn't that big of a deal. Pick what you like and enjoy it, rather than arguing about how an 8 year old in a cartoon is an SJW or whatever.

The jokes and theme are good. The pacing is awful, the plot is dumb (Homer doesn't feel cool / Homer tries to act cool, but fails / Homer shoots himself with a cannon to be cool / Homer stops), and it's pretty cringey even giving it some leeway for cultural shifts. If you just focus on the one-liners, you're going to like it. If you focus on where it sits in comparison to other episodes, I don't know.
