Their designs are awesome, but their origin story is a bit bad.

They dont even really have an origin story, do they? Dont they kinda just say we always have been and we always will be or some shit like that, even though that obviously cant be real?

More like a whole DLC in 3 that explains it. That and 3's ending with the Star Child.

Pretty much all the Alien races in the Mass Effect Trilogy are great.

The Reapers where created but rebelled like the Geth, but they have had like a million years to evolve and become stronger, they exterminate and absorb cultures/ technology like the Borg.

Essentially...

The Leviathans were an ancient race long, long, long ago and created an AI to serve them and help solve the "synthetic problem" - and it decided the reapers was that solution and harvested the Leviathans into them and kept on doing so with new races each cycle to continue doing what it was programmed to do.

Or something, been a bit since I played the DLC so may have a few details wrong.

They were created by a race called the Leviathans, which evolved in deep oceans and could indoctrinate other species, which saw them as gods. But the dumb part is that the Leviathans saw that the races under their dominion usually created AIs which rebelled against them, so to solve this issue, they... created an AI, the first Reaper, which promptly rebelled against the Leviathans.

When I was younger and in High school I thought they were brilliant. Now, they are more of a meh.

I think the general concept behind them is cool, but a lot of the details they fleshed out in the third game made them less so

Their excuse for what they do is that without the reapers, synthetics would destroy all organic life completely. Instead of allowing some civilizations to develope to a certain degree, and then they come back to harvest.
