Arceus looks better than Oblivion which is one of the ugliest games ever made

Gameplay and performance should always
be prioritized over graphics. The newer games are examples where all 3 are bad

Usually it's ugly art styles that keep me from playing games more than anything

It's a balance. The game looks like shit because they're shitty developers, not because they needed to divert resources for gameplay optimization.

that water honestly pisses me off because even i have made better looking video game water and i'm literally just some guy

I think the point is more that Nintendo is probably charging AAA price for something that looks like a GameCube game out of pure laziness.

Some games intentionally are made to look retro or older but thats not whats happening here.

The water and textures in that picture look extremely bad and I dont think its on purpose or an intentional art direction

Arceus is in-between N64 and GCN

Why not? Gamers can be hippocrits and they need to get checked often for it.

On one hand, I actually enjoy 6th gen graphics a lot. If games could keep those and just get better in every other way, that woud be awesome....

On the other hand, I hate lazy and greedy publishers who don't give their devs time/money to make the games they want to. Definitely think Nintendo falls in that category for most of their IPs (Smash is the only one that did a big blowout game, and I think that's only cause Sakurai has clout and a level of control other devs aren't afforded)

Tbf, to be absolutely fair here...as someone who hasn't and will likely never play another Pokemon game after the original gold&silver; graphics and art/design direction are separate things and they're both pretty bad in that particular case. It's a visual medium and one should aim to nail at least one of the two.

People also have a sense of perceived value based on things such as budget, pricing, and what's possible at time of release. There's also the possibility this is a separate subset of gamers and there aren't as many hypocrites on this subject as you might initially think.

With all that said, you do have a point lol.

Why do people think there is a hivemind? There are a ton of people who are graphics whores and a ton that are not.

Whoever made that wasn't trying to make some insightful point or anything though. They were just trying to collect fake internet points.

Personally I feel like if part of the game's USP is to wow you with stunning and vast environments then graphics kinda matter.

They have the money to do better. They just aren't.

They don't even try because Pokemon will always sell gangbusters regardless if it sucks or not. Pokemon is too big to fail.

So the argument is somehow not about "graphics" but "lazy designs" and also they can afford to do better so they should.

My counter argument is that Pokemon has ALWAYS been a basic and simple design aimed for casuals for a casual playthrough and they have never been known for their graphics.

Because they have been handheld games until recently. And their 2d sprites were completely fine for the hardware they had to work with.

The whole new direction of Pokemon is an issue in and to itself, they don't care about the games anymore, since they make so much more money off of overpriced merch, especially in Japan; it's basically an otaku franchise now, however unlike Gundam or Macross; which always had that market, Pokemon did not as it was a family franchise and it is unsustainable in the long run.

When gamers claim that, typically graphics mean how realistic or powerful the fidelity of the visuals are. Not the artistic and stylistic integrity of the visuals, which is always important in visually dominant media. In Pokmons case the graphics neither push the limits of power nor are they artistic or given stylistic nuance.

Again, I just think you guys have some weird high expectation. I saw Pokemon and I knew exactly what I was going to get.

And fans have been complaining about the basic and simple designs for several games now. Being fed up with Game Freak didn't start with Arceus.

That isn't from a dev. It's from a pirate.

And it wouldn't take the fans to fix the issue here as PC games tend to let you interact with distance-based culling through the options menu and that is the problem at hand. FPS drops are far more of a problem on console than PC.

To be fair though. Pokemon is one of the most successful franchises around. They have no excuse to why that game looks THAT bad.
