I was having a discussion with someone about different film formats and why film is superior to digital. This person then claimed that no one can tell the difference. All of these movies have come out in the past fifteen years are in various formats such as:

Tube camera... which I'm not actually sure what it's recorded onto but it's a fun thing to throw in here
DV Tape
16mm
35mm
65mm/70mm
IMAX
iPhone
4K

This should be fairly easy imo. Some of the images might be too recognizable and give it away tho. Anyway, there are between 1 and 3 of each of the above formats in the below images. See if you can correctly guess which is which!!! Will put spoilers for correct answers in second post. Oh wait I can only embed five pics at a time. Hold on. I feel like Nightmare Alley is proof that digital has come such a long way. A noir color film all shot on Alexa 65 and it looks as beautiful, if not more, than most modern films shot on older formats.

Idk. I just recognize the first 3 from post #3.

1- Crazy climate guy from First Reformed.
2 - Funny cop chick from Gone Girl.
3 - Inland Empire because that was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life and was only saved by the random homeless Terry Crews appearance.

didn't see it yet but the trailer looked very waxy and disgusting. not getting my hopes up.

also blown away that people think the tragedy of macbeth looks good. looks like utter dog shit to me. super CGI, super digital, bruno delbonnel should be banned from working.

best looking movies this year were unsurprisingly both shot on film - licorice pizza and the french dispatch.

You can blame Book of Eli for popularizing digital in major studio productions. It was going to happen anyways, but that was pretty much the first major movie where studio execs couldnt tell the difference between the test shots presented both in film and in digital. Saved them a shit ton of money and the headaches that come with shooting on film.

Steve Yedlin actually has a really good side by side comparison video somewhere comparing 35mm to an Alexa, same footage and they're basically identical. Pretty sure he shot Knives Out on digital and it doesn't look it. I think TLJ was 50/50 film/digital and I don't think anyone could spot which parts are digital and which are film.

I think people look at film vs digital and the "film look" the wrong way. It has nothing to do with the camera or the format really, but the process in which the image gets developed. Digital cameras are constantly getting upgraded with newer tech and there's so much tech getting developed for post production that it's probably easier now to successfully emulate the "film look" through better LUTs and post production than to actually shoot on film, process it and still get the desired film look.

yea, i would agree with all that, the main issue obv being that the vast majority of studios/filmmakers/DPs don't attempt to do this or at least make digital look interesting (IE unsane shot on iphone making the movie more claustrophobic). rian johnson or the guys i highlighted in the images are exceptions obv.

if nightmare alley is still playing when positive test rates are below idk 5% i'll go see it in a theater.
