I just watched this movie wednesday for the first time. I might have enjoyed it if scenes didn't run 15 minutes longer than they should have. They show a craft landing for 8 minutes. it slowly lands, cut to the cockpit and the pilot, cut to the craft landing again, cut to the pilot, cut to the craft landing, cut to pilot (he hits some buttons this time), cut to the craft landing. SO MUCH FILLER in this movie. This movie could have been 45 minutes if you cut out all of the drawn out scenes. The first 30 minutes is of those damn apes. easily could have made that a 5 minutes scene. Ruined the whole movie for me.

I must say, I didn't know the pre-historic act of 2001 was 30 minutes long. It felt more like 10 minutes, to be honest.

Maybe a little different since I wasnt an adult but when I was about 15 I got a copy of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it was amazing. You can almost feel and smell the Texas heat and rotting animal corpses.

But as an adult is say A Clockwork Orange and Pulp Fiction both lived up to the hype. Awesome movies.

Most of the classic movies I've seen, I've seen as an adult, and a great number of them have met the hype well. It'd be easier to make a list of classic movies that failed to live up to the hype, so here they are. Classic movies I saw as an adult which failed to live up to the hype.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Blues Brothers
Animal House
To Kill A Mockingbird
Patton

Also, though I think its a fine production and a good movie, I was underwhelmed by 1935's Mutiny on the Bounty just the other night.

The first time I saw 2001 I was like 15 or 16 and I watched it all by myself on my couch and it blew my fucking mind. I couldnt believe how real everything looked, it had better special effects than any movie I have ever seen before, and it was made in the 60s. I knew I was watching a work of art and I was mesmerized. I still havent had a viewing experience like that one ever again in my life.

I will admit the visuals are great for its time. It does not excuse the fact that every scene draws on 10 minutes longer than needed.

Youre looking at it wrong. Its not filler, its meant to convey emotions. Emotions of discovery, vastness, and ultimately loneliness. Its meant to be watched as a work of art, not like a normal movie.

Its not just about the visuals, its about the undiscovered.

I agree with him. There's a time for celebrating exploration, discovery, progress, etc., and then there's literal 20 minute stretches of nothing while classical music plays.

The middle part of the film is brilliant but the beginning and very end are pretty pretentious. I think it aged somewhat poorly. It was a technical marvel of the day, the likes of which few had ever seen before. It made sense to linger on the realism. The effects largely hold up to this very day, but the pacing is another story.

It reminds me of that ~5 minute scene in Star Trek: The Motion Picture; it slow-panned over the enterprise for a hilarious duration at a slow pace. It was a big deal for fans to see the ship with high budget visuals, in theaters, for the first time ever, but on subsequent viewings it just drags.

Now make that scene 5 times longer and put it in more than one place and that's 2001

I love Kubrick. Dr. Strangelove and Barry Lyndon are number two and three on my all time favorite films list respectively.

2001 is the film of his I like the least and I find it largely boring and feel like a lot of people tell themselves they love it more than they do. .

But I feel the same way about Vertigo. I love watching cinephiles roll their eyes at me when I tell them that one.

I have yet to see a Kubrick movie I dislike. I would've added Barry Lyndon to my list itt, I was blown away when I saw it, only there wasn't really any hype for it, on the contrary, I pretty much only heard negative things about it. I loved it though.

Until 2001, most sci-fi movies were about screaming girls being chased by glop monsters. If nothing else, it deserves its iconic place for shattering that mould.

I'd agree that filmmaking has come a long way but that not all of the way it's come is necessarily good.
Examples? I mean a lot of stuff nowadays feels like it was made by the same guy, if you know what I mean. Very formulaic and cliche in its presentation. But the thing is, that's always been a problem in the industry (it's why something from a particular era can "feel" like it's from that era, after all).
Problem with older movies (and this applies more and more the further you go back) is that the cultural beats just don't apply anymore and it gets harder and harder to connect with characters when they're less and less like you or anyone you know. Go back far enough and they don't even seem like people.

I'll also add One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Haven't seen that film (and won't) but this is how I feel about the first Alien. I love Sigourney Weaver but that movie was very silly. If the xenomorph were presented the same way today the movie would be considered a comedy
