It's sad. Never known a case like that but I did know a guy (ex bf) who got kicked out when he came out. He was young and didn't have handle on life yet either. I hope he managed to make it.

You severely underestimate how unhinged some parents can be about the reality of having an LGBT child.

Kicking her out of the house? Demanding her go to church and pray the gay away? Threatening to cut her out of the inheritance? That, I believe. Hitting her with the chip bowl feels like the most extreme kind of hate. It's like coming out to your father only to realize in that exact instant that he's the secret love-child of Adolf Hitler and Myra Hindley.

She wouldn't have come out to him if he had shown previous warning signs of violence or extreme prejudice. It's all about the psychology - not the unlikelihood that monsters to exist.

She comes out to him in good faith as though she full expects him to accept her for who she is. He immediately responds with violence. The part that is unrealistic is not that a father would be abusive, but that there would have been no warning signs growing up. If you have a parent who is capable of violence, you know to walk around on eggshells. You don't challenge their views if you can avoid doing so and, when forced to, you approach with caution - with self-preservation in mind. The only way this scenario plays out is if he'd been an ideal father all the days that she was growing up and then snapped the moment he found out she was gay.
