halo was always and is still owned wholly by Microsoft. Bungie had a contract with Microsoft to create halo ip, then that contract expired and instead of renewing they wanted to go out and do their own thing and not be tied down to one company.

Halo then went to 343i. still owned by Microsoft.

and bungie made destiny, then eventually it tanked, and they sold themselves to be tied down to one company again.

or something like that.
