Yet the Wii was a joke for actual gamers. Is the Switch the same?

https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/3/22915715/nintendo-earnings-q3-2021-switch-sales-forecast

The Nintendo Switch had a relatively strong holiday quarter, with 10.67 million units shipped between October and December despite the global semiconductor shortage. That brings the systems lifetime total to 103.54 million units shipped, meaning it took just under five years to overtake the Wiis 101.63 million.

Shipments were still down nearly eight percent year on year, but Nintendo was clearly less affected by the supply chain issues than some others. Sony, for example, announced yesterday that it only shipped 3.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the same period. Nintendo also launched the new OLED model of the Switch last quarter and says it got off to a good start.

Damn

Furukawa still insists that the Switch is in the middle of its lifespan. If that's the case, and we still get like another four or five years, I wonder if it stands a chance at finally dethroning the PS2 someday. I think it would totally depend on what its successor is.

And to think, a certain undead avian here was insistent that the Switch would flop harder than the Wii U.

Wonder how he feels now?

There isn't really any interesting first party games on playstation or xbox imo. Third party games usually hit PC now and tbh nothing really huge there. Cyberpunk was supposed to be huge, but it had tons of issues and was really bad on consoles anyways.

Which leaves the console that has... pokemon games on it.

Switch is in a very unique market niche between the "big boy" games you should be playing on PC anyway, and the dogpile of freemium-moneyholes on phones.

Point is pokemon itself is bigger than the "big boy" games on PC.

Maybe it's time for the PC pokemon knockoffs to just be knockoffs, and not insist on being an MMO or fremium garbage or whatever.

Good for fucking Nintendo. Especially after the trash talking about the Wii U. Hopefully the Switch will become the best selling console ever. Having said THAT, it will still need to sell about another 47 million units or something.

Well... yeah. Was that ever a question? I can't tell if you're trying to be disparaging towards Pokemon or just making what should be a pretty accepted statement

The reason these fail is not because they do stuff like mmo or fremium, but the magic of what makes pokemon good is just not replicated. See Yokai Watch.

That is, Pokemon is more than just a game:
  1. It has nostalgia (wow new game I get to kill things with Pikachu in!!!)
  2. the type system is both really clever and braindead simple
  3. there is reason to play way too much for many (people literally soft-reset their games for shiny legendaries and starters. what other clone has things like this?)
  4. actual multiplayer
  5. idea that what you do in the current game will affect your next game because you can transfer all that work you put into it. this is also why people can soft-reset like that and hunt all day for certain traits
  6. yet despite having an actual complex secret system like ev, iv and all that bs, a 5 year old can actually complete the games
  7. which is important cause of the show
  8. card game still one of the biggest card games

Anyways, this prob going slightly off topic.

Switch just turned out to be really primed and came out at the right time

I mean, many switch games were actually just Wii U ports.

This is because many people just outright refused to buy a Wii U but they were ok buying a switch.

I would say switch is my favorite Nintendo console so far, which is something I never thought of before. But I was disappointed with the GameCube, unimpressed with the wii, and skipped the Wii U entirely.

I tend to have much better memories of Nintendo handhelds and favored PlayStation/Xbox for controller games. The snes does give it some competition though.

Now that I think about it, the failure of the Wii U is probably the greatest contributor to the current success.

It forced them to make the switch tbh as xbox and playstation just made an upgraded version of their console.

This drew the eyes to the switch and it boasted ports of wii u games that people had ignored before. This also gave them time to work on better games for later since they had alot of games they could port that felt new to most of the buyers of the switch.

Vita didn't have a docking option, and many games struggled to maintain 30fps at a resolution lower than 720p

Also the storage lol

Vita either had shit unique games or watered down port.

Switch has AAA first party exclusives.
