I have other grievances against Mayor Adams that aren't this, but they're similar enough that I am satisfied by his apology.

Damn! Now I have a better opinion of him than I want to. Oh, well, I missed being led by politicians who piss me off by being good politicians. Good to have normal back after almost a decade.

Considering most of the murders done by police or from white police officers I dont see how hes wrong in anyway whatsoever

It's a racial slur, and quite apart from whether people are offended by it or not or its context, it was made in 2019, at the time he was the Brooklyn Borough President. As such, even if it was private conduct, it was IMO conduct that interfered with the city government's ability to provide the public its services without regard to race.

The reason I overlook overlaps with the reason I don't like Adams in the first place. He has made a political career out of being one of a very small class of blacks in law enforcement, and criticizing the police's and the city's actions along racial reformist lines. In so doing I believe he is a (not by any means the only) grandfather of many of the city's and country's problems arising from an overbalancing of racial reformism in government's and society's way of thinking, not the least of which has been the Defund the Police movement, criminal justice reform, and their explosive effect on urban crime in only the past two years.

The reason I believe PBA Head Pat Lynch overlooks it touches on the other side of this issue. As the NYPD has diversified in the past 20-odd years Lynch himself has stayed in office by embracing over time where the city's center is on racial reformism. That is, he honors both the trailblazers like Adams--very important--and the focus on diversity that led to hiring more minority officers, and he likes the results. In doing so he has benefited politically by being re-elected by that increasingly diverse labor force. I believe Lynch is a better leader for it.

If you take what I believe Lynch's position is, that means you recognize that what Adams is saying is an informal expression that a certain personal grit was important to remaining in the NYPD at a time when most people believe it was more difficult for black officers. Adams was vested in racial competition, not as a universal moral good, not because he believed in racial superiority, but for fostering excellence in a career where institutional racism against blacks was a player. (And not for nothing, but the chances that Adams didn't encounter clear, direct, illegal racial harassment from other officers during his time as an officer are basically nil. I imagine he might have strong feelings about his enemies' competence.)

People are complex. Government agents cannot be. The people of the City of New York who are not black deserve confidence that Adams's blue-collar sentiments will not get in the way of making things fair for the rest of us. He has given that necessary statement. We are better for it.

And attitudes like overlooking Mayor Adams using a racial slur lead to police departments perpetuating overt racism. Yet there is a supposed benefit in doing so that outweighs the harm. If I had five minutes in hell for every "not nice" thing I advocated or overlooked I'd probably get out by my next birthday. It'd still be worth it--oh, there's another five.

You shared a story in a tone of bitter humor. Other posters mirrored the humor part of it. By all means clarify your remarks to say only the bitter part is important.
