What weapon should I prioritize first and upgrade at the beginning of the game?

Max out the Evelyn ASAP

pimp cane obviously, its the skill weapon to start with. later on i always used the blade of mercy or chikage, then the scythe. i platinumed the game before the DLC so i never tried it, cant tell you what weapons from that to choose.

Cane then use Bowblade

I feel like I could make a run for the Beasthunter Saif. Ima try that let you know how it goes.

definitely learn to parry, visceral attacks scale with your level and skill, throw in a maxed out Evelyn and monsters are in for some serious hurt

Got the Saif and Blades of Mercy cuz I accidentally failed Eileens quest : /

blades of mercy are so much fun to use

Reminder that Blades of Mercy are a PVP weapon and you will spend more time getting creamed in PVE than not.

Ive now fully invested into Simons Bowblade. Such a fun weapon. Also completely stopped Ludwig. My memory of him was much harder than it actually was.

for future reference, you can also use false depth chalices to get Lost or Uncanny versions of pretty much any weapon as soon as you beat Blood Starved Beast

Chalices are dirty things for dirty people. Also from what I read the lost bowblade is better purely for the archery attacks and a tinge build. Which doesnt interest me as much.
