You're in close contact with staff and other patrons when you're walking around. You are not when you are seated, and obviously can't eat if you're wearing a mask.

I'll preface this by saying that I wear a mask whenever I go into a building even though I'm vaxxed and boosted.

I'm by no means anti-mask, but the point Matt and Trey were trying to make is that it absolutely doesn't make a difference if you walk to your seat with a mask because everyone is breathing the same poorly ventilated air, and sitting in a booth a few feet away from another patron. As for the staff, they still need to take your order, deliver your food, get refills on drinks etc. The mask is protecting you and others for the 5 seconds it takes to get to your seat and then you are at the mercy of fate.

If you are concerned about catching covid you should absolutely NOT be eating out at restaurants.

The rise of social media and rise of hot button topics did them in. They had staked themselves as the show that maintained an irreverent social commentary, so maintaining that meant they would have to keep pace with the rate in which these topics cycle in the modern age. It's taken them away from their true roots in being crude and downright ridiculous. On top of the flanderization of characters like Cartman, Mr. Garrison and Randy.. It's not that different from any other dying show attempting to stay relevant.

I'm watching the episode and unless I'm missing something this episode seems more like it's mocking Republicans for thinking having to wear a mask makes the US like Nazi Germany.

^Yeah it was clearly to show how fucked up it was. Later season Stan-centric storyline arcs pretty much all had downer endings.

Let me be more clear, the only weird part is the ending, when Sharon (who up until now has been the voice of the viewer) ends up agreeing that school shootings aren't a big deal. The way the scene is framed is as if it's a positive realization for her. I'm aware that the behavior of everyone else in the episode is mocking Republican/American apathy about school shootings.

None of this changes the fact that masks only work when they're actually worn.

Yes, wearing them while eating and drinking is impractical. Yes, it's still meaningful to reduce risk where you can practically do so even if you can't do so everywhere. But the idea that popping a mask on for 15 seconds while you walk to a table, then taking it off while you're in there dining for half an hour if not more, then popping it on again for the two minutes or so while you pay your bill and leave, is going to make any difference - especially with the Omicron varaint - is absolutely laughable.

i think the idea is to wear the mask not just when you walk to your seat but also while you wait for your food. and after you eat, while waiting for your bill. it minimizes the time everybody spends exposed.

most people don't do that though. because people go to restaurants to relax.

anyway i just watched the episode and it's dumb.
