I want to say it was Jay and Silent Bob strike back where they're making their movie and Ben Aflecks like "I cant believe anyone would be stupid enough to pay for this" as he looks into the camera.

I like bad movies. Although I seem to recall hating some 'dating' movie where the guy had a vision of thousands of condoms falling from the sky. Can't remember what movie it was.

Yeah, that wasn't good. The Happening with Wahlberg would be another contender: not much worse than a horror/suspense movie that isn't, you know, suspenseful.

The Seeker.

I saw it for free in a theater, and still almost walked out three times to demand my money back.

Afterwards, I basically wished really, really hard that anyone and everyone involved in making it would die of painful testicular cancer. Even the women.

If I ever win the lottery, I will spend all of the money hiring assassins to hunt them all down like dogs and kill them in the street.

I didn't like the movie, is the point I'm making here.

ANON on Netflix. Interesting premise, but between the pacing, and the ridiculous plot hook going into the second act I was annoyed. No antagonist that is that savvy should also be that oblivious unless they had the attention span of a goldfish. Especially if the whole McGuffin relies on how fastidious the antagonist is about details.

The Last Samurai (spoiler post)

At the end, during the final battle, the samurai charge head on into gatling guns with a limited firing arc without making any attempt, while on horses, to flank there firing position. A lifetime of warfare, a moment of failure.

Cheesy, sure. Kind of lame, absolutely. Nowhere near as good as other superhero movies that came out around the same time? Definitely.

But I always saw it as just inoffensive mediocrity with moments of ridiculous overacting from Samuel L, not really rage-inducing terribleness.

Wasn't the point of that scene that they were basically deliberately committing suicide because they knew their cause was lost? Combined with a bit of a hamfisted metaphor for the old ways of the noble warrior philosophies giving way to modern sterile military combat? It wasn't just a tactical failure on their part.

It's also, if I remember correctely, at least somewhat based on an actual historical rebellion, which ended with pretty much everyone dead. So it's basically what happened in real life (just under different circumstances, but same outcome).

I'm not 100% sure, though, because I remember thinking that movie kind of looked like shit when it came out, and I was already really meh on Tom Cruise, so I never watched it.

This should be qualified with me explaining that I *rarely* see truly bad movies, due to owning a very good BS detector when it comes to films. So even my worst-seen films might be a meh and a shoulder shrug to others.

That said, it was pretty bad. The story was a mess, and comic parts were very cringe, and it failed to capture the style and engagement of Sin City, which The Spirit was definitely paying homage to, fresh off of Miller's time with said movie. Some of the action scenes were fine, but it was fairly blrh.

which The Spirit was definitely paying homage to

I'm not even sure I'd go with "paying homage to" - it was Miller actively aping the style of Sin City because Miller was the driving force behind getting The Spirit made (and possibly the only person on Earth who actually cared about the franchise).

Up to that point Miller's only real experience with film was Sin City and 300 (both ridiculously overstylized green-screen films), so that was kind of the only frame of reference he had to work with when he became both writer and director for The Spirit. Maybe having a more experienced screen-writer or director might have helped salvage it, because they would have been able to compensate for Miller's weaknesses.

If anything, that might be my biggest complaint about the film - it was trying to do The Spirit as if it was Sin City, but The Spirit had a radically different tone/feel as a comic, so it wasn't a good fit. Less green-screen and a different tone might have worked better.

Then again, maybe not. It might have been doomed no matter what tone it took, because it was a franchise most people didn't remember/care about anymore. Sort of similar to how Dick Tracy kind of flopped in the 80s... it was a product of its time, but it's time had already passed.

Same reason I tend to loathe whenever people talk about doing remakes of 80s cult films - most of them are films that only work because it was the 80s, and any attempt to redo them now will run into the brick wall of tonal dissonance and shifting values and expectations, resulting in inevitable disappointment and dreck. Leave the past in the past. Or let the past inspire you to do new things, not just ape the old.
