No, I'm sure it's been over a decade at this point. Our private board was our only meeting place, and an administrator deleted that without notice in 2014. I hope he's doing well!

Thanks for the followup
Just watched Ikiru for the first time. Although I'm much younger than Watanabe, I think it was the perfect time for me to see it. Its themes are all relevant today. Now that I've broken a streak of watching shitty movies, I think I'm going to continue with more Kurosawa. I imagine you had a lot of exposure to his work around 2010 or so--which of his films were your favorite?

Arielle's World was an alright French language drama, The Midnight Man was a decent horror film, Inferno was a reasonably good film (a lot better than The Da Vinci Code), and there's a zombie film I saw that was alright, more or less. Horror Film.

I've seen a few of Kurosawa's films, and Ran was probably the best. I don't know why people love him so much, though. The best thing about Japanese cinema is probably the horror films.

such a beautiful movie. i'm 39 and saw it for the first time a few weeks ago. it definitely would not have impacted 20 year old me the same way it did 39 year old me.

Love Ran. Have you seen Dreams? Seems like one people might miss but I think it's my favorite.

+1

Embarrassed to admit I reneged on continuing on with Kurosawa--for reasons I can't explain, watched the new Spider-Man movie. Never got into Japanese horror, Sunhawk, but there's a Japanese adaptation of Heinlein's The Door into Summer on US N3tflix right now that is tempting me, if only for its novelty value

Dreams is alright.

Japanese horror and the American adaptations of it are actually SCARY. Homegrown American and British horror are often entertaining, but not particularly scary.

Burnt Offering - interesting American horror film from the 1970s. An elderly Betty Davis appeared in it. Some good scenes, and the twist at the end was very good.

Theatre of Blood - this is basically a popcorn fllick, but quite an entertaining one. A former stage actor goes slightly crazy, and has critics killed. Vincent Price stars in it.

You know, I don't understand why Vincent Price is considered one of the most important horror film actors ever. He's not THAT good, and his weird and high-pitched voice means he's not scary at all. Why do people like him? He's not Lee, or Cushing, or even Isabelle.
