I personally take my shoes off before entering. I hate it when people enter my house with their shoes. Canadian here. I visited by American friend and as I was taking my shoes off, he told me that it's okay to leave them on. Alright. Well, his carpet was absolutely filthy. It was completely matted down and there were dirt stains everywhere. I don't know how people can live like that. It sorta looked like this picture here from google images. Shoes absolutely should not be worn if the house has carpeted flooring.
