So I made a post here shortly after NYE with some VGM Trivia which you guys seemed to enjoy. I took that idea and turned it into a series! Very Jeopardy style, and was able to have some incredible creators on Youtube take part. (SuperDerekRPGs, DesigningFor, KingK)

I did not do well but I got Seymour instantly so I came away satisfied with my performance

I was a bit shocked that no one got that one to be honest. I thought that was one of the easier boss themes, but perhaps I'm biased haha.

The RE4 one and the X4 one I was kind of shocked nobody recognized. When making it I thought those were gimmes.

Dang, I watched 20 minutes and couldn't get a single one. Despite the fact that I beat Halo 1's campaign 3 times in my life and played the multiplayer a bunch back in the days, that song didn't even seem familiar to me in the slightest.

And I wasn't even aware RE had music. I beat Village just 2 months ago and I can't remember anything from that.

Only watched Round 1 so far and got two right: Persona 4 (which I knew immediately) and Mother 3 (which I didn't get until I heard that very last riff since I recognized it from Smash Bros.). I recognized the KH song but I couldn't place which game. I would've guessed MM for the first one but never would've been able to place which game.

my wife also insists that I mention that she recognized the series of two of them: Mega Man and Kingdom Hearts

i just want to call out the fact that picking specifically gran turismo 2 moon over the castle is dumb because i was totally unsure which one it was. like come on it's in every gran turismo smh

Round 3: Only got Smithy and Seymour

Should've gotten Zero-Two since I had to hear it in VGMC so many times. I recognized the Asgore theme as from Undertale but didn't know which boss it was. I can't believe I didn't recognize the Rex/Ray boss theme from MGS4 at all. I guess it's been too long!

Round 4: Got Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy Tactics (the death scream was such a great pick, loved it). Recognized the MMX one but couldn't place it. Should've recognized the P3 one, but alas.

Round 5: Knew Turtles in Time but didn't know which level, blanked on all the others

I thought it was very well done. Good presentation and hosting, went pretty smoothly from here.

Regarding the song selections, I think you did a pretty solid job, especially considering you picked a very large number of songs for a single episode. Across all the categories there was 71 clips, which is a lot! I actually think you could get away with scaling it down a little bit, especially if it meant more or more frequent episodes in return.

I loved the fact you gave the last place person a chance at a comeback with the category selection and priority buzzer in the later round. Keep that if you can. On the other hand, I wasn't sold on the final round. I felt it was too hard, and felt a bit unfair to the music as well. Overall difficulty was fine otherwise.

I do think there is still some room to diversify with regards to the game choice and song choice:

• It was pretty heavy on Nintendo+Square specifically and certain franchises kept showing up. That advantages anyone familiar with those specific ones. Granted, I'm not sure how much the playlist was tailored to the guests - I know if I was in your position, I would definitely consider biasing the list toward things I thought my guests would know - so maybe that's a factor here, and that's valid.
• In terms of the music itself, there was a lot of rock(-ish) songs, battle themes and upbeat adventure themes. Sensible, because those songs tend to be the recognizable and popular ones, but I definitely think maybe you could squeeze in a couple more songs of a different sort. But I do understand it's a challenge to achieve a varied sound while keeping the quiz accessible, and yeah, accessibility is the most important thing.

There's a sub-community here which is big into VGM. We hold a yearly "best vgm" tournament, users regularly create "ranking threads" where people nominate music for them to listen to, and we regularly play in vgm trivia games on discord (we had our 345th trivia game yesterday). That's why @Isquen scored quite well, since we're part of that group along with some other names in this thread. Feel free to poke around if you're interested in that sort of thing or looking for more music to listen to!

Worth mentioning the Discord quizzes often have Hard sections where half or more of the songs aren't recognized even with 6+ VGM trivia experts(?) listening, which is not ideal for a Youtube setting. Taking songs from the Easy sections might make sense, but yeah. (Though even there...some of the songs are only considered "easy" because the quiz-maker knows that soundtrack is well-known within B8 VGM specifically)

Yeah, for the first episode I wanted to be Nintendo/Square heavy since those are undoubtedly the most recognizable OSTs in gaming, and needed to gauge just how hard things should be. And honestly I STILL think it was too hard. I am biased though since I consume VGM on the daily, from a wide range of series I've never even touched or heard of.

I definitely agree with you that I need to pick some more chill, vibey tunes as opposed to the hype themes. I just prefer those to be honest, but I'll agree it needed some more diversity in that respect.

The final round was an experiment for sure, and I think I got some telling results. After the game they told me it did make them uncomfortable trying to listen to both simultaneously, and while that was the goal, it wasn't a great experience. A good idea I believe KingK pitched was to have the start of the clip just be one song but have it gradually fade into an overlap, and then fade out into the second song. I really like that idea since it gives a bit of a chance to hear one song or the other individually, but not for too long.

Where is this VGM Discord? Is it in the B8 one?

Yep! #vgmgg hosts the games, getting yourself the vgm role allows pinging. There's also the #vgmusic channel, but I don't read that as often as I probably should.

Watched through the first part last night during some downtime. I was screaming "Gran Turismo 2" at the screen.

I put that one in kind of knowing no one would get it, but to give it some spotlight.

Nice! I've been admittiedly struggling to find people to play the next episode. I no joke had 4 people tell me they were interested, only to completely ghost me once I started talking about setting up a time to do it. Collabs are fun but can be frustrating. Still, don't want to let this idea die.
