Do you have a problem with her representing China?

18 y/o China's Snow Princess Eileen Gu has stirred up quite the controversy back in her BORN country, the United States and mortal enemy to who she represented after winning 2 golds and 1 silver at the 2022 Beijing Olympics!!

Her switching sides has brought the ire of many celebrities, former olympians and conservatives such as Nikki Haley after deciding to represent China where she has hit the daily double and made BANK since doing so and has over 40 MILLION and MORE so far from it.

Talk show host, Bill Maher has called her out for her TRAITEROUS intentions citing the California-Born skier a "traitor" and said "Is that cool now, to choose to represent a totalitarian police state over America? The Olympics pretends to only be about sports but of course the games have always been a proxy war for which country has the best system. And by choosing Team China, Eileen Gu became a living symbol of China's triumpth over the west, which wouldn't bother me so much if i thought China had triumphed over us in the ways that really matter, but they haven't"

Former Gold Medal Winner, Jen Hudak also slammed her citing "Eileen is from California, not from China. her decision seems opportunistic. She became the athlete she is because she grew up in the United States, where she had access to premier training grounds and coaching that, as a female, she might not have had in China. This makes me sad. Those medals deserve to be in America. Land of the Free"

Nikki Haley also slammed her for "picking a side" stating she can't be both despite Eileen stating she is proud to be both American and Chinese and said you can never be both in America

But in terms of endorsement deals and money earned since switching sides, Eileen has minted a massive haul in just her first Olympics where she also models for IMG models, one of the most renowned in the world.

Michael Payne, a former chief marketing for International Olympics Committee said if you look at the most successful athletes like Michael Phelps who earned up to 100 million, Eileen is well on her way and possibly more for switching sides for bringing home the golds as her face is everywhere now in China and is the most beloved star.

Eileen says she's not letting the hate get to her as she's proud to represent China and said "if people don't believe me, if people don't like me, then that's their loss. They're never going to win the Olympics"

She switched sides to represent her mother's home country as she went to visit China yearly with her since she was a child and wanted to make her proud.

With that change she also jumped ahead of the US in total gold medals and beating them for most at a Winter Olympics for the first time in history.

If representing China made her $40 million and representing the US would not have made her $40 million, that's not exactly a hard decision. I doubt a single one of her critics would have turned down that kind of a payday for the principles they're harking on about so desperately.

Many of her critics are likely already selling out to China or exploiting China for labor or product

I thought we were long past the point in the "civilized" West believing having a double nationality was some form of "betrayal"?

Don't pretend that you wouldn't actually defect if it meant you got $40 million, let alone "defect" in such a trivial sense as being on the "wrong" sportsball team.

So those of you calling her a traitor:

How do you feel about the Canadian who brought you a gold medal in women's (monobob) bobsleigh?

Congress had to pass a bill to grant her citizenship because she had been in the country for less then three years.

I have no problem with Gu representing China, but this is a bit different. Humpries would have continued representing Canada if not for the harassment she felt she was getting from her coaches (that were dismissed by an investigation team the coaches hired).

I'm pretty sure she'd have made the money either way?

She's really cute, but flat-chested.

tbh, if you represent a nation in international competition, you should reside within that nation.

...which country did Humphries live in directly before and after representing the US? Because you're making the critics' argument for them -- if you rep a nation, that's your nation.

Well, it's... I admit I don't know much about this topic, but I think that this is a more fundamental problem with how sports in general are structurally organized across the globe. While you don't *have* to represent a State, not doing so is unusual and likely rather difficult, and because it is something of a posturing flex of the best-represented States over others, it becomes culturally divisive to the public and difficult for participants who have complex relationships with multiple places for various reasons.

I dunno. The Olympics always seem to bring out and elevate the voices of casual bigots and nationalists. It almost makes me glad that I don't really give a fuck about sports beyond seeing that people have a right to participate in them if they wish to.
