Youd have to be living under a rock these days to have not heard of TikTok, a social media app that exploded in popularity during the early days of the pandemic. Once thought to be for teens and early 20-somethings, the platform has expanded to include niches for people of all ages and interests (theres a huge #PlantTok community, for example).

One of the largest and most fascinating (at least to this writer) is #BookTok, which has changed the publishing landscape over the course of the past two years and given a slew of backlist books new life. The following ten books truly exemplify the power of that community to push year- (sometimes decades-) old books onto bestseller lists (one book on the list is literally almost 100 years old!).

Out of the list A Little Life is my favorite. That book is a 10/10 read.

You have to have the right headspace for it, though. Its very depressing.

Pride and Prejudice, and it's ilk are what all those Otome Isekai Manga's are "loosely" based on. Literally.

When you walk into a Barnes and Noble, do you ever see tables devoted to BookTok?

I saw that last year and was taken aback. I didnt think TikTok had any influence on books and publishing. Kind of cool how its getting people into reading.

yeah nice to see a new platform used as a marketing tool for old books whose royalties probably don't even go to the writer anymore

I self pub on amazon and I'm always on the lookout for new kinds of advertising, so I've heard of doing it through tik tok but for the life of me I have no idea how people even do that. I should probably actually try looking at tik toks first.
