Well, depends if you plan on playing them all. If you do, start with one so you don't have to deal with loss of tech and game mechanics by jumping back and forth.

DMC1 is pretty dated, but still fun. DMC3 is a prequel to DMC1 anyway, so it's a good starting point. However, going from 3 to 1 might feel like a significant downgrade if you play them all, so if your plan is to play everything, play 1 first. But feel free to move on to 3 if you don't like 1 much because of its limitations. 3 is an improvement in every conceivable way.

Also, don't play 2, it's not good.

Start with Devil May Cry HD Collection it brings the first 3 Devil May Cry. Play in order, although if you wish to skip Devil May Cry 2 you can skip it. Although I recommend to try it and see for your self if you like it or not.

Then get Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition and Devil May Cry 5 or Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition depending what PC or console you have.

It's mediocre. It's fun enough but doesn't do anything story or gameplay wise to standout.

Maybe one of my favorite final bosses though. The final final boss not that atrocity right before. Actually feel like I'm fighting the real devil

my first was dmc 1 as a kid but i found it too hard so dmc 2 was my fave for a time lol. I used to have dreams about being trapped in that game and being attacked by the winged bipedal goats and the skyscraper demon.

Devil May Cry 2 has some good ideas, like being able to change amulet to give Devil Trigger different powers. Sometimes the use of Devil Trigger is required to progress in missions.

However the controls of Devil May Cry 2 seems bad when it comes to combat.

Anyway I completed all Devil May Cry games including DMC reboot. There is no unplayable Devil May Cry game.

I recommend to play like this:

Devil May Cry 1 > Devil May Cry 2 (can skip if you want) > Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition > Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition > Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition.

Devil May Cry 1, 2 and 3 Special Edition are all in Devil May Cry HD Collection, so basically 3 games in 1.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition is only for Xbox Series X/S and PS5, so the normal edition is the option for other consoles. However you can get Vergil by DLC.

It feels terrible to play and the guns are so overpowered that you can spam your way through everything. Also had a really tumultuous development cycle. We still don't know who the original director was but Hideaki Itsuno replaced him with like six months left and scraped together what he could, then asked Capcom to let him make DMC3 so he wouldn't be known as the guy who made DMC2.

To answer the TC

Start with DMC1, it's a bit archaic as mentioned but it's also quite short.

DMC2 is terrible and you're not missing anything if you don't play it, but if you buy the HD collection and you have access to it I'd say it's worth firing it up just to feel how bad it feels to play.

Then go 3-4-5. 3 and 5 are the pinnacle of the series and 4 is a slight step below those two, held back by rushed development.

dmc 4 is arguably the best in only one aspect which is movement. only because it has strong inertia so you can zip around the screen if you manipulate it properly. I never practiced enough to get good at stuff like the royal guard jump flying (i forgot the exact term dmc calls it lol) but it looks really cool.

I think 4 is still my favorite in part due to having a more compelling story than the others...not that it matters that much in DMC game.
DMC1 has a bit of a Castlevania feel to it amd it was a great game when it lunched, but the mechanics will feel outdated compares to the others.

3 ia great, but hampered by having to stick to one style class at a time instead of switching on the fly like 4 and 5.

5 is amazing and probably the best one objectively, but Ill never get over not being able to change neros arms at will. Such a missed opportunity!!!!

DMC1 is very dated, though has some cool level design and overall aesthetic.

If youre looking to experience what DMC is known for, the bombastic gameplay, youll want to play 3, 4, and 5.

Id still give the first game a look, it holds up pretty well and is pretty fun too, though keep in mind its not super representative of the series. It kind of took on a new identity with 3, and stuck with that.

Nah, it's a bad game just on its own. It's a boring slog, even though it's short. The combat is easy because of the guns being OP, and the way it's structured you're really pushed towards using them. The levels are too big and using melee smacks the enemies away from you so it's really inefficient and annoying.

I liked Dante's design though and Desperate Devil Trigger.
