There's probably tons of reasons. For some it could just be that they have a short temper and lash out the moment their kid tests their patience (and as a parent, trust me, kids definitely test your patience). It could also be taking out their frustration/stress on someone weaker. But I'm no psychologist, so that's all I can think of.

A couple of years ago, I kinda got into an argument with my dad. I straight asked him why he always mistreated and beat me. He said it was because it made him feel powerful.

I was shocked that he gave an actual answer. He usually deflects to it being my fault.

Also, he is 100% narcissist and almost certainly a sociopath. So, it allows him to control situations. If we stand up to him he uses that as justification to do whatever he wants and then plays it up to his friends and family that we're the ones causing problems.

Why do you think this topic pops up every two weeks?

What do you qualify as beating?

Because kids are annoying.

For many, they were likely raised that way. People who would beat their child should have never brought one into this world.

It's either they can't control their temper or deal with stress well and lash out or they genuinely think it's the best way to discipline kids and punish them for poor behavior.

Some people just shouldn't have kids.

A combination of the two sounds about right, at least from my experiences. Kids can do some really dumb shit sometimes, they're still in the process of learning what things are really stupid and why, and someone who isn't in good control of their emotions will find it really easy to lose it on them, and then feel the need to come up with a justification for it after. It's never justified, but someone who isn't a psychopath needs a way to deal with the cognitive dissonance that their actions produce.

The people who hit their kids just to hurt them even when they've done nothing wrong are truly the vilest scum of the earth and deserve to have crows eat their eyeballs.

Its morbid, but as a new father to a 3-month old Ive had the thought that, I cant believe child abuse/shaken baby/etc isnt more common

we are relatively privileged in having no financial issue, I work from home, my wife isnt working right now, and still caring for my son can be so, so frustrating

at 3am when hes screaming his head off and nothing will console him, sometimes you just have to set him down and walk away for a bit

i absolutely dont condone child abuse but it does put things into perspective where I can see how someone could just snap

You're absolutely not alone there. Before my son was born, I had multiple dads tell me that I will have moments where I get so frustrated that I will want to shake my baby. Their advice was exactly that. Step away for a bit and have her take over. Congrats on the baby though. It does get easier.
