Ive been rewatching the show and he was never stupid early on then when he has his growth spurt he seems like a smart kid just going through stuff.

Plus his parents arent stupid. Also, Lucky was a shitty character

Puberty hit him so hard it scrambled his brains like an egg.

Yeah he sucks.

I mean, early on, he was basically just "Bobby's friend" without much else going on. It wasn't until the puberty stuff that he really became his own character and started getting plotlines about becoming a jock and awkwardly getting into dating.

It's more of a consequence of the writers not really bothering with him at all early on.

i like how they differentiate post-puberty joseph by giving him a blue shirt instead of green lol.

After he comes back all tall he seems like a normal kid just awkward and going through puberty. Then later on he's just a straight up idiot.

Give me one example of him displaying above average intelligence in the early episodes. Look at his home situation. You expect him not to develop into an imbecile?

Yeah honestly I never really got why they introduced Lucky as a regular character. Were they really jonesin' to have an actual southern hick character that badly? I thought part of the point of the show was to express the subtle stereotypes of Texan culture, without it turning into goofy cartoon versions.

Because that boy ain't right.

I'm sure most of us blanked put the weird shit we did during puberty by now, but if you're around younger family members.. Joseph is believable lol. Young boys are weird and awkward as hell

His parents arent stupid? John Redcorn might be his dad but hes being raised by Dale, who is pretty stupid. Joseph was just turned into the typical teenage boy who hit Puberty and acts dumb.

What never made sense that he was a tall, in shape, good looking dude who was literally the quarterback for his football team, and yet, he was so bad with girls and was portrayed as a loser in school

I was under the impression that while Joseph was extremely awkward with girls, both he and Bobby were relatively well liked by their classmates, not losers.

Puberty happened. He was awkward and goofy right from the first episode with his growth spurt

actually yeah, you're right. Still, there's multiple times where they are targets for bullies

Early puberty blows.

The benefits come later on, but when it's starting everything is terrible.

I couldn't stand Lucky as a character, I felt like he wasn't funny at all and he ruined Luanne's character development as well.

Luanne's character development was wrecked by the writers never having a clue what to do with her character at any point in the series aside from the Buckley arc.

She started off as a competent mechanic before that aspect of her character was dropped and never referenced again.
Then she became the struggling beauty school student with a ditzy side.
Then she got the Buckley arc and had some phenomenal character development, leading to her going to college.
Then the writers did nothing with that for years before having her unceremoniously drop out and go back to hair, and having her become a stylist in a matter of minutes while ignoring that she always struggled in beauty school.
Then she just became a flat-out moron in later seasons before being shoved into the Lucky thing just to give her character something to do.

Her character was a mess aside from the Buckley stuff.

His dad is Dale and his best friend is Bobbylol I think his character is fine.

Luanne should have had a nice character arc about moving away from her stereotypical dreams of beauty school into the more masculine (but where her talents actually lie) field of auto mechanics. Peggy would want her to do it and arrogantly try to help her practice despite being woefully incompetent. Hank would be unhappy because he doesn't think women make good mechanics, but understand at the end that he wants Luanne to have a job that shes good at. The episode writes itself.

Instead we got Lucky.

Oh yeah, her character kinda was all over the place later on. I also remember why I don't like Lucky.

I only laughed at Lucky once and that was eating a chip fresh off the line.

Other than that he was an awful character.

Yeah, never did understand why they didnt make luamme a badass mechanic. In yhe first 2 seasons, she could diagnose a car's problem by scent alone

Lucky was a great character, what are you people smoking?

He has one of my all-time favorite lines in the whole show.

I don't remember Luanne being a mechanic. when did this happen? I think I've seen every episode, so I'm surprised I didn't know this lol

I don't think they ever did an episode focused on it but there are several occasions early on where she works on Hank's truck and Cotton's Cadillac and is shown to be competent with it.
