The building I live in has seven apartments, one washer and one dryer per floor. For about a week now, the washing machine on my floor has been broken and the door to the laundry room locked up by the building manager. But today, I noticed that the door was unlocked and the washer back against the wall, instead of being pulled out like before when the room was locked. This is the chain of events that followed.

- I ask the building manager if the washer is fixed, and am informed that men came by to fix it today. They didn't tell her anything when they left, but it should be fixed now.

- I go back up to my floor (4th), get all my laundry together, and load it into the washer.

- I put in my quarters, choose my usual settings, hit the start button, the washer fills with water and... nothing. Washer still broken.

- Go back down to the manager's office to inform her that it's still broken. Get reimbursed $1.50 in quarters (the price of a wash) for my troubles. She's a nice lady.

- Go back up to my floor and transfer my soaked but still unwashed clothing into the dryer, because even though they're not clean, I need to dry them before I take them back into my apartment. Dryer starts fine.

- I go into my apartment and get some paper towels to wipe up the water that dripped onto the laundry room floor.

- I go back out to the laundry room to find that the dryer has stopped only about 30 seconds after starting, and will not start again. The dryer is now broken as well.

- Ashamed, I go back down to the manager's office to inform her that I have apparently broken the dryer. She assures me that it wasn't my fault and gives me four more quarters to reimburse me for the cost of the drying cycle. She also tells me that I am free to use the laundry room on a different floor if I need to. She's a very nice lady.

- I go back up to my floor, collect my still-waterlogged clothes and towels, and head down the hall to the elevator, dripping all the way due to the hamper obviously not being water-tight because of course it isn't because I don't think they make hampers that are because why would they. The wet laundry is very heavy, as well.

- I take the elevator to the 3rd floor and lug the wet clothes down the hall to the laundry room at the opposite end. I load my stuff into the washer, put in my quarters, hit start, and discover that the third floor washer is also broken.

- Now heating up internally from frustration, I collect my laundry and head, still dripping, back down the hall, up the elevator one floor, and back down the hall to my place.

- Taking some paper towels with me, I head back out to wipe up all the dripped water from the non-carpeted places I had been, including the elevator and 3rd floor laundry room floors. I then go back to my apartment.

- Exhausted, angry, and with a hamper full of wet clothes and towels, I take an unexpected anger-nap.

- I wake up about an hour and a half later, and take my laundry to the 5th floor. Thankfully, this washer works.

That brings us to now. I'm not frustrated anymore, but I still feel bad for breaking the dryer.

Laundry has and always will be a frustrating part of apartment living. Poor machines make laundromat trips a better option.

Ah I don't miss apartment laundry. I can't even remember where the laundry room was for most of my apartments. Must have been traumatizing.
