From what I remember, collecting flags is just a thing to do but I don't think it gives you any rewards.

Do not collect the flags. There are over 400 of them and they'll artificially triple or more the time you'll send on the game. And you get literally nothing for doing them.

I played through those first 4 games you're about to do last year, and I tried to 100% them. About 300 flags into AC1 I was like "wtf am I doing" they just arent worth it.

There's not a lot of mods for that one i know of. There is a fix you'll need to get if you're using a gamepad on PC. Otherwise you should be good to go.

Afaik the extra collectibles like flags and stuff increase your health bar (the sync bar), but not enough to justify looking for them. Ive collected a couple flags and killed a few Templars just by stumbling upon them, but Im not gonna go looking. Mods for the game are just like texture packs and whatnot, so Im not gonna bother.

I killed the weapons dealer guy in Damascus, and the doctor/butcher guy in Acre so far. I tried silently killing them with the hidden blade, but both times something tipped them off and we engaged in a swordfight. Didnt make me very assassin-y. I suck :(

iirc the flags gave you an achievement but only in the xbox 360 version, otherwise they literally do nothing

Killed the fat gay guy. The old headmaster guy I report to is definitely shady.

I discreetly killed all the archers 1 by 1 and killed the fat dude just as he started running. Definitely feel more like an assassin.

Damn I forgot how shameful those stupid flags were. I didn't even hate AC 1 like everyone else did, it was okay (plus standards were lower as the first ac game and all that)

I don't think the collectibles start to be useful until AC 4 Black Flag, and it's not until the Origins era when the series becomes an open world pseudo action rpg when they actually benefit the gameplay like improved stats and getting stronger etc.

But before that, the collectibles are just there to kill time nothing more. It's most egregious in AC 1, admittedly the worst of the bunch.

Just by stumbling across collectibles, Ive collected enough flags and killed enough Templars to max out by health bar. I just killed Robert de Sable and he revealed the twist to me. Im guessing I have about an hour left in the game, going to finish it later today. I really really liked it. Gameplay loop of finding viewpoints, collecting intel, and assassinations was enjoyable. I could see it getting repetitive if every other game after this has the same structure, but for now it didnt wear out its welcome.
