Doubtful. Memories are short. There are plenty of people in Hollywood who have done much worse things that are now long-forgotten.

While true, a lot of those probably weren't televised live to the world. Also society today is a lot different now. People's reputations are ruined just by stupid tweets. This is an assault broadcast worldwide so the footage will be around forever and the media will have a field day with it.

I dont think Will has to be cool with a joke about a condition his wife has. Slapping chris rock is not the way to handle it though. But we see will laughing after the joke so it all seems kinda funny...

He doesn't have to be cool with it, but he does have to understand that it's a joke and not an actual mean-spirited verbal slap in the face like he took it as. Rock is a fucking stand up comedian, that's what he does.

It's just crazy 'cause this was set to be a really cool night for him, winning his first Oscar, but now it's definitely gonna be overshadowed by the fact he lost his cool and struck Chris Rock on live TV. And now the two moments are tied together so that'll make for fun trivia research in the future.

I think that's what is ultimately difficult for people to get because his public persona is so positive and he projects such confidence and likeability that to see that he's messed up emotionally in such an extreme public display is so bizarre. It's like he lost all sense of rationale and logic and that is not the Will Smith that people have known for 30 years. It's crazy.

Good god, this is sad af to watch. It really looks like Will has been manipulated and trapped into a severely toxic relationship. Again though, time and place. Do it backstage in private, make him apologize to Jada, whatever. Don't attack a comic in front of the world for making a joke that was meant to be in good fun. What if he didn't even know about her disease and thought it was a style choice? Not saying that was the case but still a possibility.

Confronting someone on being disrespectful is fine but to lash out in public like that was way too far. And I'm a longtime fan of Wills and will continue to be but this was absolutely the wrong way to handle it. Also there would have been kids watching this show and for Will to choose to display violence like this is so messed up.

Im still wondering what you believe is appropriate retaliation if a smack apparently isnt enough in your eyes.

If you have to do it right there and then, just call him out. He could have shouted that the joke crossed a line or even walked up on stage and told him off. People might have still saw it as rude (though it'd be easy to paint Chris rock as the bad guy if he did it right) but he shouldn't have used violence to make his point. It just comes across as childish and basically made a lasting impact for the audience that'll be remembered poorly judging by the current reaction.

... Everyone has a line, where ribbing becomes bullying, and that line is different for each person. If you're going to ridicule someone, especially for their essential characteristics (their body/mind), you should not be surprised when someone lashes out.
