You don't have to wait until you get hurt to act in self defense. Can you legally hit them first? Legally, no. Words alone will not provide just cause in that case. Many impulsive people have found this out the hard way. It's different if the provoker is also threatening with violent intent while taunting you. But even then, that's only because they were the first to attempt assault. You can argue that the taunting made you feel endangered enough to make physical contact first, but it's a sketchy defense at best. You have to prove you had valid reason to attack first in order to protect yourself.
