More food here in usa

I remember the first time I visited usa after a long hiatus and being surprised by the chicken cutlet curry portion size in Hawaii vs what i usually had in Okinawa. The former was at least twice as large! I couldnt finish it.

Many reasons. One a lot of people dont mention are happy meals or kids meals. Entice them with a neat toy so they beg their parents to go get the trash food that goes along with it. When you are a kid, junk food is much more enjoyable than healthy food. It then teaches bad eating habits during their development and become obese adults eating fast food 5+ times a week.

I've been all over Europe and part of the reason Americans are so fat has to be the transportation system. Need groceries in the UK? Walk 1/2 mile to the train station, walk another 1/2 mile to store, then carry your groceries all the way back.

In America we'll drive 5 minutes around the parking lot to get a spot 50 feet closer to the store.

I used to work at a dominos back when they first started having pasta as an option. At the time, you could order it in a bread bowl. I don't even remember the calorie cound, but they used the same dough as a 10 inch pizza plus a full portion of pasta. When I loaded them up and customized them for myself, I could get 3-4 meals out of one (2 meals for a standard one). One time, 2 morbidly obese (not using as an insult, but medical term) people came in. Each ordered one. They ate them there, then each ordered another and finished those as well. I felt bad for them.

A lot of the problem is we basically guzzle down sugar water. Like one single can of coke puts you over the recommended sugar limit for one person in one day. Also stuff like orange juice just as bad. So you drink a glass of orange juice in the morning, then have a coffee with creamer in it, then a soda with dinner later...you have taken in a shit ton of sugar many times what you should ever be having per day and that's without even factoring food in.

The biggest problem is not enough fiber/nutrient dense foods (fruit, veg, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds) and too many calorie dense SOS danger foods (Salt, oil, sugar) in the meats, dairy, eggs, sodas, sweets, breads and addictive snack foods.

-Huge portions
-Cheap food made with cheap and unhealthy ingredients
-Comfort food loaded with saturated fats and sugars - especially high fructose corn syrup

People go for all of those things because the average person lives on a tight budget and doesn't have alot of time to seek healthier options.

Most Americans also bitched about that KFC double down being so bad for you. They didn't seem to realize that it was pretty middle of the road for most fast food items and was actually filling af. Like you'd be pretty full from a 500ish calorie item which is not common for fast food.

Is high fructose corn syrup actually any worse for you than just sugar, or is it just one of those "evil foods", like MSG and fat used to be?

I mean obviously it's bad for you in the same way sugar is bad for you. But surely it's just you know. Sugar. But in a syrup form, from corn. If the US got all their sugar from beets or cane, then "organic corn syrup" would probably be some trendy health food.

It's the portion sizes and the amount of sugar we consume. Some things are super calorie dense too, for how unfilling they are. And those tend to be the cheapest foods. Like ramen noodles. Cook your noodle brick and add the seasoning and you've got 370 calories worth of noodles. That's more calories than a cheeseburger. And it's just noodles. And I love soda, but there's a ton of calories in those too.

Fructose gets dealt with a bit different than glucose because the liver takes care of it. Too much of it turns into fat, and it's easier for the liver to do that when you're also eating a lot of dietary fat, like french fries or a burger with the soda.

Doesn't matter if it's organic or genetically modified, the molecules do their thing.

Again, sugar is not the main problem, it's the fat.

From my quick googling, it seems the difference in fructose content between HFCS and cane sugar is negligible.

At the end of the day, even table sugar is just 50/50 sucrose and fructose, and any unnaturally high anount or concentration of fructose without naturally occuring fiber being present is not good for the liver and can overload it. And eating a bunch of saturared fat only makes it worse.

I should fix that last sentence.

Too much fat in general (but particularly saturated fat and cholesterol) are bad overall because it overloads the liver and lymphatic system, and eating a bunch of unnaturally concentrated fructose, without the naturally occuring fiber present in the whole food to slow down absorption and integration into fat cells, makes it much worse.
