Realistic Scenario: Elon treats Twitter like a frat party hookup: Pumps her while she's low, then dumps her while she's high. He pays the SEC a small fine and laughs in their face.

Fantasy Scenario: Elon truly is the reckoning of Twitter blue checks. He means what he says and institutes all that stuff everybody from The Donald was hoping he'd do someday. No more "cancel culture." Whatever the likes of Charlie Kirk and Jack Posobiec did to get banned, Twitter will no longer punish that. Which means Donald Trump gets his Twitter account back, and his sway on the people. Just in time for the Democrats to flunk their midterms and be buckling down for 2024.

Andrew Torba, desperately angry that Elon didn't buy Gab instead and having lost the lefty boogyman that Twitter used to be, doubles down and declares that he and his are surrounded by the soft and weak. Oh, you think Twitter is good now? You have no idea of the basedness that could've been, because you're not on Gab. If you can't handle Gab? Frankly you're no better than the liberals you claim are so radical. He becomes the face for an ever farther right.

Bernie Sanders sees a Bezos-owned Washington Post to one side. A Musk-owned Twitter to the other. Da Billyinaires have shown just how unstoppable the American government (and by extension its people) are letting them be. It's 2016 all over again, if not worse. Trump has all the audience he wants, and the powers that be are literally saying "Yeah I know he's crazy. But fuck you if you don't like it." Bernie becomes as left as Torba becomes right. "Elon Musk is not your friend, America!!! Do you see now??? Don't you want your pound of rich person flesh now??? Is this not yet an enemy you can fight with a clean conscience?"

2024 ends up being one of those late sequels/reboots that lives up to the hype of the original.

It's a pump & dump stunt. There's no way he has that kind of liquidity. You can't just come up with that kind of dough that fast. He's gonna drive up the price of the stock then dump everything he's already bought.

Oh, and Gamewinners. It introduced me to Gamefaqs because that's where it redirected to the guides that people would make. Cheat codes used to be a thing. People doing amazing in-depth guides used to be a thing too.

Sure. Technically. But if you're expecting to wake up tomorrow and see that he's, I dunno, made it so every tweet now has a bird chirp sound effect or something that's not gonna happen for several more months.

In more mundane terms, he's bought the house, but he still needs to get all the paperwork settled and actually move IN.

He's made an offer and the owners have agreed to sell, but he still has to get the money together and it has to go through all the paperwork (in real estate terms, researching title, checking for liens and easements, surveying the boundaries, establishing escrow, etc)

Yes but he already has everything he needs for it. Nobody ever said it would be instant.

So by this time next year we see if he flips. Or if he's really serious about his plans to overhaul what many seemingly worried people refer to as the world's "town square."

It's kinda strange, coming from a pre-YouTube pre-Twitter Internet and hearing people talk about "Oh they banned me for talking about this!" When that's just how things were on the Internet. You wouldn't be like "I was discussing porn on GameFAQs and they deleted my thread? Freedom of speech!" But that's because GameFAQs represents a different time in the Internet. I bring this argument up to people, and people are like "Yeah, but Twitter is unreasonably huge and we all depend on it. So it has an obligation to allow me to say/prevent others to say this thing."

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm smarter than both sides of this argument and the Internet was better when I was growing up.
