Then he doesn't know what people think will happen. He doesn't know what people like about Twitter and are afraid of losing.

Those people are stupid. Nothing will change.

If I'm on there and I seriously mean the things I say, and I'm about to lose that platform, I've lost something meaningful.

Don't take this personally, but nothing of value would be lost if Twitter ceased to exist tomorrow. There are other ways to communicate online.

Not really, they will just migrate somewhere else.

IRC, AIM, MySpace, Facebook, all stuff that connected people back in the day, all stuff that people moved off of and picked different platforms. Twitter is no different.

When people say "Twitter bad" we understand it is not Twitter's fault, it is just humanity in general. Give people a platform where they don't have the ability to read their audience and cast the widest net possible and it is just going to bring out the worst in people. Twitter is just the biggest example of that currently.

Those are all examples of wildly different communities. If I left MySpace, I didn't find another community out there like MySpace.

If you're not in touch with the community enough to have an idea where the community wants to migrate, either it isn't that important to you, or you aren't really part of that community.

Not different, evolving. People moved from MySpace to Facebook because it was better in most ways. Sure, some people insist on sticking with it until the bitter end, but most people moved off of it because Facebook was the new thing and it was the better platform.

It's not a handful of "stans," it's an entire website. You can't ask all of Twitter where they're going, because they're not all going to the same place. Just as not everyone from MySpace went to the same place. And that's why you can't just move from MySpace and find another MySpace. It breaks up and dies. Ceases to exist.

Facebook isn't like MySpace and never was. By the time MySpace was dead, I could not go to Facebook and talk to a community that was like MySpace.

I am really not sure what you mean by "community" in this case because it is very well known that MySpace died because Facebook was better. Everyone that was on MySpace moved to Facebook. Yes, MySpace is still around hence my mention that some people stick around "until the bitter end". However, ask anybody who used to have a MySpace page what they did after they left and the universal answer is "Went to Facebook".

Twitter is no different, it is popular now, but it has been around 15 years. It is very likely something better will replace it and people will move to that.

By "community" I don't mean a handful of people. I mean the entire website. "Political Twitter" is not "Facebook group" sized. It's an entire ecosystem. And that's what people stand to lose if Twitter goes down.

The MySpace ecosystem was also lost. When you left MySpace for Facebook, it wasn't like MySpace.

Twitter isn't going down and it wouldn't be a loss even if it did since Twitter is trash.

Trash to you and me, but we're talking about this Penny Arcade comic. Written by a guy seemingly confused about why anyone cares about Twitter. Hate Twitter all you want, I do too, but this "Why is everyone so excited about Twitter" stuff isn't insightful, it's a lazy punchline in the worst place for lazy punchlines: A comic that's supposed to be funny.

Which means it's not a community, most of it doesn't communicate with the rest, these are separate ecosystems. Just like on Earth, everybody in a single country doesn't share a single community, it's a collective of them. If you can't track the bits you follow, you're not in those communities.

You are perfectly capable of following all these groups independently, you don't have to stick to one platform if not all of your communities live on it. It's fucking weird to latch on to something as arbitrary as the platform, it has nothing to do with the people who use it, it's the format, the aesthetic on top, which can change with zero consequences.

An ecosystem is where everyone is communicating with each other? That's not an ecosystem, otherwise every bird in the woods would know every other bird in the woods. An ecosystem is bigger than just a close group. It's an entire environment.

An environment where the elements interact, a single forest can host many ecosystems.

If Twitter is the town square, I don't like town squares. I like forums where people who hate each other are forced to engage.

Twitter, Youtube, facebook, if you're an anti-vaxxer then you'll find a place because the recommendations keep you around stuff you already like. Then they have to resort to deleting posts so people don't devolve into spirit science election truthers, since no one came around and pointed out how stupid some ideas are to facebook mom.

People who think posts should be left up are wrong, but the algo enforces the need. If you got rid of the compartmentalization people would stop naturally spreading crazy shit.
