Uh serviceable premise I guess.

Idk it's tough to rate something that's better off without story.

For an early 3D platformer that prioritises gameplay over storytelling (you know, like most platformers), it's serviceable, simple and doesn't attempt to overcomplicate itself. Yes, Mario 64's story is barely there (and arguably Mario 3 and World are better), but I reserve my low scores for games that tell bad stories or execute them noticeably poorly to the point where it hurts the game.

Would probably give it a 4 for kind of just existing and not being offensive but all dialogue in the game is delivered by horribly acted Princess Peach that's enough for me to ding it a little bit

Extremely average. I do like the concept of worlds being hidden in paintings, but the story doesn't explore that concept in any meaningful way.

I feel like I've been giving scores more based on how the story hurts or helps the overall experience, and sm64 does neither.

I guess the opening dialogue isn't great and the texts of dialogue by the bosses are really unneccesary. You don't need King Thwomp to explain to you about how he's going to get revenge for all gravel...actually that's pretty funny.

You could argue it should be higher since it doesn't really detract from the game experience, but that's just not the criteria I'm using.

I don't really agree it has no story

Plot is super barebones but all the other elements like characters, setting and the like are there

I do like the idea behind the setting with the enchanted paintings that have worlds in them.

This is just me picking nits though

Does anyone else think it's weird that the game opens with Peach's letter inviting Mario to the castle for cake, but almost immediately after that has Lakitu narrating that Mario is there to rescue Peach and find the Power Stars with no explanation?
