The Witcher series has a pretty weird but neat example of this that both subverts and plays them straight. In the first game you can get the Aerondight as this legendary sword. There are others too but this is the big one. In 2 you can import your save and start with your fancy swords and armor, but they're scaled down to not be much better than the starting gear. You get to use Aerondight for the whole prologue, at which point you lose it. In 3 there is no direct gear transfer, but in the DLC you can complete a series of quests to get Aerondight back, restored to endgame power level, with some extra dialogue acknowledging it. Can't think of anything that doesn't nerf any cool formerly endgame thing you start with though. --- I definitely did not forget to put the 2020 GOTD Guru winner, azuarc in my sig! ... You start with Devil Trigger in DMC1.
