While I get people saying "I could access porn when I was 13" as completely legitimate, the difference between that and Twitter is the ease of use for minors to submit their own nudity on Twitter. When the app allows you to take pictures and post it almost immediately, then you create major issues.

I think it's stupid to restrict access to viewing porn as I don't think it's generally harmful for a 13 year old to look at porn. But we should restrict the ability for youth to post images or videos themselves.

You really think that statement covers it? Child pornography is already banned everywhere legal on the internet but it'll still pop up. It's part of the reason why Tumblr removed all porn. It's part of the reason why Only Fans almost disappeared last year. While we do have an FCC that has done Jack shit in the past twenty years, in reality, they would have already gone after these companies for their lax rules and moderation around child porn among other things. A company is still responsible for what happens on its platform whether or not they post a statement saying they "ban" it.

OF didnt almost disappear because of child porn. It was never intended to be a porn site and they wanted to clean it up before they realized how much money theyd lose if they did. You have to send in your IDs and validate before you can upload stuff. Twitters problem is that you can upload without verification

Minors shouldnt be accessing Twitter in general. Parents and internet providers should take more care to prevent kids using Twitter or any social media. The harm to developing minds it well documented.

I understand anyone can view Twitter without needing an account. Porn and other similar content should also not be allowed on Twitter unless it is behind some sort of 18+ gate where you need an account to access.

So long as there's one porn site that doesn't insist on an ID or credit card, that's where the kids and paranoids go. When it dies, some other one will pop up.

If, by magic somehow, no non- or weakly-gated pornsite exists, it'll be back to swapping burned DVDs or USB drives or something.

....I hate to be the one to point this out.... but you can get access to that stuff just by typing in a google search bar. Kids aren't that dumb.

Kids exchanging USB keys and porn mags behind the bins will probably increase. But you misunderstand. The goal isnt to reduce people swapping porn behind the bins. Its reducing the ease of access to porn overall. Its not so different to having age restrictions on buying porn in shops.

From my experience there are more young kids looking at porn today than back then and the data backs it up. The more easily available porn is the more likely kids are to view or. Much like the days before the internet a small number of kids will go out of there way to get hold of porn no matter what. This isnt aimed at them. This is aimed at the majority whos first and usually only exposure to porn comes from their electronic devices.

I think you're on the wrong end of the spectrum. I don't think we should be like the pearl clutching mothers of the 80s and 90s ask why no one thinks of the children, but their is an association between social media use and depression: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7392374/

I think it's important we try to figure out more about this connection and don't dismiss any restrictions to social media use as hating children. I will say it does start with strong parenting and better education around social well-being (whoops Florida will just ban it).
