And what is your experience level and if/if not your went to college for CS

Seriously considering just going to college since it's like almost free in Ireland for CS and Irish since both also lead to guaranteed teacher jobs as a back up

I have a bachelor's in CS

Mostly I nap and am on my phone

When working mostly I debug other people's shit or run tests or fight against infrastructure issues. Nearly none of what I learned during college has been applicable here

Less often I actually program shit (which I actually enjoy). 99% of that is just writing stupid tests anyway

This is where I'm at currently in my career. There was a point in time where I was heavy coding though but a lot of what needed to be done so far has been built

TeaMilk, what is an example of an infrastructure test? And debugging, you're just pointing out all the problems with someone's code

I dunno man
I just want a comfy wfh job where I don't need to deal with 'hey IT Lord, please kindly do the needful and tell me my printer is fucking broke because I put in 500 pages instead of the recommended maximum of 300 sheets at once'

Oh idk I don't think we have those? Just like, oh our automated test server broke so I have to message some guy in India to fix it and wait a day because I don't have the permissions

I dont like what I do, but they pay me so fucking much for very little effort I probably shouldn't leave. What you described sounds nice, helping people directly would make me feel useful

Spend way more time than I should reinstalling nvidia drivers because it's 2022 and they still refuse to play nice with Linux, yet they also want to be the main name for supplying GPUs for use in robotics and machine learning applications which, you guessed it, has a huge population of Linux users

If they're paying a lot and you have downtime look into getting the comptia A +
it's like $200 for the test I think and lots of resources for free
It's kinda like 'babbys first IT cert' and you probably covered a ton of stuff in it already from college but still good.

Then go by an IT Support Man and repeat 'restart, no not fucking shutdown, the restart on the menu'
And soon you will hate your life too

Right now it's just configuration stuff. Hopefully I'll get back to coding soon. Usually at my other job there was a lot of reading, coding, and debugging.

Configuring what how

So it's just like Apple and Mircrosoft
'you just log in and it totally downloads the profile and... no wait somewhere it broke. Oh just readd it to both Apple and Microsoft and try again!'

Too entitled to pick up a broom or help a colleague. But then again, "not my job" mentality is very popular amongst people under 40.

I program
Fine Ill expand

i work for a contract app development company, so I build apps for whatever needs the customer wants

most of our stuff is connected devices (IoT). Just got done building an app for a connected LED device, picking colors, adjusting brightness and pattern, etc

my next project is an app for connected ice fishing flagsthe app connects to a bunch of accelerometer devices that alert the fishers when they have a bite

also do bug support on a physical therapy app that uses attached sensors to track exercises (actually similar to ring fit adventure exercises lol)

so theres a constant steam of new work to do but its fun and interesting stuff

Some of it is painful. Current job is nicer than my other one at least since there's a lot more people in the company, and I can use Slack to search through channels to see if anyone has the same issue as me. Annoying part is there is a lot of downtime if I need to make requests to do something.

Does the SMT know you have so much downtime?

CS degree with 12 years of experience.

I spend a few hours a day writing code. Implementing new features, upgrading tech stacks, fixing bugs. A couple hours a day in meetings, most of which are pointless. Then a couple hours a day just doing whatever I want (laundry, reading the news, getting dinner ready).
