For as long as I can remember, I've had some pretty intense aversions when it comes to food, which has led to an absurdly narrow diet. This Wikipedia article more or less describes what I'm dealing with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avoidant/restrictive_food_intake_disorder

When going out with friends, I'd always have to scour a menu beforehand to make sure there was something I'd eat. Or I'd make a point of eating beforehand. Anything to avoid dealing with...my shit in public. I'm the guy who requests no onions/tomatoes/etc., but I recognize how that's frowned upon and try to stick to menu items that I don't have to make substitutions for.

I'd like to change this, it's not by choice. But it really is a physical aversion to stuff. And as I go out more in NYC it's becoming a harder subject to dodge.

it's not frowned upon to order something without an ingredient and I wouldn't eat anywhere where it was. Though some restaurants don't allow mods, but if they don't they will tell you.

Ok, but I just want the TC to know the person cooking your meal does not care that you don't like onions, and in fact that's one less unit of onion that they have to prepare for future dishes.

I guess some restaurants might not separate their ingredients, but again that goes back to whether mods are allowed. But something not being doable isn't something being frowned upon.

What bougie friends you got that look down on people for substitutes >_>.

It literally doesn't even make sense in fancy settings.

"To really enjoy this dish and appreciate it, you must get it with the things your personal tastebuds have negative reactions to"

Shits idiotic.

I'm not sure that's true. I imagine kitchen staff would rather autopilot a dish than have to be aware of exceptions.

Not that it matters what they want.

I'm sure it depends on the individual worker but I have worked with cooks and as cook, and personally I didn't mind mods (but maybe I'm more likely to make an error, which is only as big a deal as the customer makes it)

there's nothing wrong with customizing your order at a restaurant

my brother has been in the service industry for like 15 years (server, bar tender, etc) and he customizes his meal almost every time he orders out

I will say that cooking for myself makes me more open to trying new things, I guess because I can do so privately, without other people looking on. But also there's me not wanting to spend money on something I might not eat.

If you mean like my family giving me shit for it sure. With friends it was always friendly shit talking. My mom quit giving me shit though after marrying a guy who him and his kids made me look like a amateur at being picky. They'd be picky over foods they did like if it wasn't perfect. One girl if my mom made something like a porkchop or steak would poke at it before eating it. Seen her refuse to even try a porkchop stating "it's squishy" idk about hers but mine was delicious

your tastebuds and/or food preferences are not set in stone, you can learn to enjoy pretty much anything through repeated consumption and it just comes down to whether or not you actually want to make an effort in that regard

Must take a lot of work. I get orders screwed up all the time and just force myself to eat it. Onions I don't think I could ever like. I'd say the same for pickles but I don't hate them I'd just rather not have them. But yet I hate a fuck up on that more cause you can't just pick pickles off and it's all good. They are going to leave their taste regardless. Which it's clear they did a lot of times at a fast food place.

Yeah, I'll pass on Stockholm Syndroming myself into liking raw tomatoes.

Only time I feel slightly bad is if I'm visiting someone and they offer food that they were nice enough to prepare but I don't like. I've heard it's a sign of disrespect to not accept food offered to you, particularly in Hispanic households, but eventually I think everyone just realizes I really am picky.

Ordering altered items doesn't bother me at all, and the places I've done so seem happy to accommodate. I'll also shamelessly order from the kids menu if I have to! Besides, my future wife has it easy, making a box of macaroni & cheese will suffice.

Maybe those who gotta ring the order up. Never seen someone preparing the order get mad at a substitution.

I was a super picky eater as a kid. It didn't matter what restaurant my mom took me to. I would always get a grilled cheese sandwich.

Seafood restaurant: Grilled cheese sandwich (or maybe popcorn shrimp)
Steakhouse: Grilled cheese sandwich

I'll never forget when she took me to Subway for the first time. I got bread and cheese. Toasted.

Then I realized I was being ridiculous and decided to just start trying a bunch of different foods.

I went on a date with a woman yesterday who seemed like she might be a picky eater. She took the lettuce and onion off her burger and never touched it separately. It's not an issue for me, but it did make me curious.

Hey as long as you're considerate and don't ruin the fun for your friends I guarantee you it's not a big deal to them.

My best friend is vegan and he just always makes sure beforehand that there's either something he can eat on the menu or a takeout place nearby, doesn't bother us at all.

My hypothesis on adults who dont like veggies in their diet is because their parents didnt force them to eat their veggies growing up and let them pig out on carbs, meat and sugar.

Believe me, it was not for lack of trying on my parents' part. I was grounded for the Super Bowl one year because I wouldn't eat something.
