Those guys aren't really interested in the culture usually. If you magically made them speak perfect Japanese and dropped them in Japan they would probably give zero fucks about local mores and would just act like a snob westerner that just happens to understand the language.

I don't watch anime and don't care much for their urban culture but I find the rural/traditional culture to be aesthetically pleasing. I think a lot of media gives the impression that the simple life there is good/relaxing and they have things figured out (in contrast to the reality of high suicide rates due to an overwhelming work life).

Also the food is great imo. Disclaimer I've never actually been to Japan.

A number of reasons

Because a lot of Japanese culture is cool.
Because a lot of Japanese despite being foreign still has a lot of connections to westernization due to the surrender in WW2.
Because the video game crash led Japan to getting a strangle hold of video game consoles in the late 80s and 90s leading to a whole generation of kids in America growing up playing Japanese games instead of American ones and being introduced into Japanese pop culture.
Because a lot of people think Japanese women are hot and by liking Japanese shit they will get to bone one.

Correct. For Japan Dallas represents a land of new opportunities that they wish to be a part of. For Amiercans Dallas represents being in Texas, a place that they want to get away from. It is how one television show can cause completely opposite reactions in a fascinating way.

Some of you guys make it sound like you have to know historical writers or famous literature figures, but fail to realize a huge population of young Japanese adults are either working their asses off everyday, or listening to Jpop/kpop in their free time while also obsessing over Western media and artists.

Yup, but some of them are obsessed with American/British culture. Maybe even Canada too, I'm seeing a lot of them talk about that country recently.

Edit: And when I say culture I don't mean old historical figures. Most of the youthful population don't give a fuck about that just like the westerners who like anime and Japanese media.
