I don't have a babby, but like damn, I thought we would naturally produce enough breast milk to feed the baby over the course of its infant stage like in primitive times. My captain said he raised his son on titty milk and cow's milk alone and his kid is a giant >_> Though I know a lot of kids can't handle cow's milk for a while sometimes.

Do kids really need baby formula this much?

A lot.

There's a myriad of reasons why mom can't always be around for feeding, can't produce enough, or other medical issues that make it difficult/unsafe.

A)many mothers simply cant breastfeed, and its not for lack of trying. Maybe mom doesnt make enough milk (esp common when there are twins). Maybe baby doesnt latch good enough to stimulate milk production. Either way, its common

B)breastfeeding is a 24/7 job. In shitty ass america, this means that when mom is required to go back to work (unless thwy are affluent enough to be able to to not), they will still have to be pumping every four hours at work, find a place to safely store that milk and bring it home. It also means that even when baby can sleep longer, mom has to wake up in the middle of the night

C)babies can have sensitivities and allergies to the foods mom eats. This ones personal for me because my 6 month old son has some sort of food allergy which causes irritability, rashes, and poor sleep. The way to pinpoint this is to eliminate an allergen from moms diet, and wait up to two weeks to see if theres an improvement. If not, eliminate another, repeat. Meanwhile baby is miserable and mom is stressed. In an ideal world where we knew we could reliably get a hypoallergenic formula we would have switched, but as it is my wife is doing her damnedest to stay nourished while maintaining this elimination diet that might not even be the right thing

D)once you have stopped breastfeeding for any of the reasons above, the milk dries up and you can not just restart breastfeeding on a whim

Yeah, there is a couple medics here that pump breast milk every 4ish hours and store it in the fridge to take home later >_> At least work is cool with them doing that since we work long shifts.

My son would never latch on, so my wife started pumping and was still only able to get about half what he needed that way. Pumping is also a hassle, so after just a couple of months we switched completely to formula

Good post

My wife was a J cup before she got pregnant and she said these damn things better be elite milk producers to justify carrying them around her whole life or she's gonna be pissed lol

It's not exactly a secret, more of an unspoken truth really, but the majority of women don't follow the rigid suggestions of doctors when it comes to pumping out milk like a living machine. After a period ranging weeks to months most women just go to formula.

my wife couldn't breastfeed. her supply dipped early on and my son went through a growth spurt where he wanted to feed every hour. she couldn't produce enough milk in between feedings, so he wasn't getting enough food. hed latch on, become frustrated and just cry cry cry.

so my wife would use the breastpump to force her body to make more while he wasn't feeding. it worked for a while, but if he wasn't feeding, she had to pump. no time to eat, take care of herself, sleep. etc. she was trapped in a cycle of feeding him, pumping, feeding him, pumping, feeding him, pumping. it was a nightmare. she couldn't do it anymore so i said fuck it, let's just switch to formula.

it was difficult for her because she felt like she failed, but she hadn't. it just wasn't working out and we needed to feed our son and also take care of ourselves. the campaign for breastmilk over formula is mostly because of the probiotics and antibodies and the bonding but at the end of the day, the boy needs to eat and formula is just as good.

so he's been on formula since and he's perfectly fine.

Part of me thinks the industry wants women to think that its ok to use formula. Its kind of a vicious cycle, you use formula, your baby doesnt need as much from you and you produce less.

What you pump may not equal what your baby can get if they feed from your breast in some instances.

I had a bit of trouble with my first and the doctors tried to convince me its ok to use formula. I powered through and went breast milk only. And am glad because my daughters poop stank so much worse when we supplemented with formula.

I'm allergic to dairy, so I'd probably be dead AF if this shit happened when I was a baby.

So yeah, I'd say a lack of formula is pretty damn bad.

This. Babies used to die at astronomical rates compared today. Babies dying used to be so common that parents would wait some time before naming a newborn.

Years ago when I visited my sister in the maternity ward there were posters everywhere about how to never give your baby formula except as an absolute last resort. It was to the extent that it was kinda weird, like they were shaming people.

apparently this shaming came from a push back against the formula industry saying breastmilk was bad and formula is better for your baby. so folks pushed really hard to flip it

i wonder if itll flip back, ie they make a formula that's actually better than breastmilk and the campaign starts anew

People should probably just listen to their doctors about whether to formulafeed or breastfeed their kid, rather than listening to formula marketing or anti-formula angry mobs >_>
