Well, Headcannon and Simon Thomley are still working with Sega (and are who worked on the Sonic 3 & Knuckles remaster), but Christian Whitehead isn't, though they're still using the retro engine he developed.

Yuuuup. Basically, Sega low balled them on a contract concerning them making additional cash based on sales because neither party expected it to sell as well as it did.

And then it did a tremendous amount of sales, and then the DLC did a ton of sales. And Sega refused to give them any further money in exchange for working on future projects. So I don't blame them--there's more money to be had if they make a game from their own studio at this point. It's really sad though because Sega could have fixed everything by giving them a bonus for such a successful project, especially since it was the only positivity Sonic had at the time pre-movie and Sonic Forces being a pile of shit.

Is there an actual source on this? The original story was broke by a known bullshitter, I can't seem to find anything from Christian Whitehead or PagodaWest on the matter, and Headcannon actually even did some work on Origins. There doesn't appear to be any proof Mania 2 was ever even thing.

Yeah, Zippo has a horrible track record and has been banned from numerous communities. I just stopped following it, so I didn't know if anything actually legit surfaced since.

He tends to make his "leaks" and "insider information" from taking known information (spotty communication between SoA/SoJ, the developers having other projects with no Sonic Mania 2 on the schedule, etc.) and makes up shit that people will eat up by filling in blanks that aren't there.

Nope, he just worked with them on Sonic stuff. He currently works for Evening Star.

Oh, and here's Gamespot dudes talking about it. It seems like a pretty even take on everything so far. I dunno, I think we should have had a bit more substantial of a trailer or gameplay or something right now that isn't just the open world stuff so we have a bit better of an idea what else we're going to be thrown into.
