Tesla Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk has asked employees to return to office or leave the company, according to a memo sent to staff that has been circulating on social media.
"Anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean minimum) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla," the memo said.
Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the memo. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. Musk could not be reached for comment.

What a based and revolutionary leader

They believe the workers will be more distracted and less productive.

Even tho the opposite is true.

That and they are stuck with shitty building leases they have to justify somehow

I realize that the leak is unverified here, but with Musk in particular this certainly rings true based on the many stories out there detailing his type-A and aggressive work ethic.

Plus, hes just a plain asshole and troll. I know of many C-Suite execs who are just stubborn, old, and set in their stupid ways and have issues with remote work, but Musk is a special case even above and beyond that.

i had this kind of boss.
finished my job early so I can relax, but he see me as lazing around so he dumped more jobs on me.
it set a bad habit on me, from that day i always delay finishing my job until near the deadline.

wow you are a good employee who got it all done faster than anyone else! Am I glad to have you?

No. How fucking dare you. You don't get to finish quick and enjoy not being busy. I never did! I am not as good as you! RAR

I have applied to Tesla a few times, and have declined the offers, because they said you actually work 90+ hours every week.

People have this idea that capitalism is about ruthless efficiency to the bottom line, but a lot of capitalists are motivated b weird, petty, bullshit concerns like this - having control over their workers' days matters more to them than the added productivity of working from home.

do you know how much bullshitting i see between people in the office? it's a LOT. all the hallway / water cooler conversations about the local sportsball team, or how Bob's kids are doing, etc etc consumes so much more time than me doing a load of laundry during the day.

yeah but they also see this as making the employees a family as in cementing their relationships so they won't as easily quit due to shit wages and go somewhere else

Supposedly in China they are locked in their factories 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, and sleep on site. It's a very Gilded Age thing to do, and absolute shit for the workers.

Were they not getting their job done?

Cause if they were completing their work, there is no such thing as slacking off. This is what shit supervisors cannot comprehend and maybe they do and they just realize in such cases their supervisor position is unnecessary.

That is, if they got their work done, on time and well, and they sit there in the office and plop open a fucking 3DS. That isn't slacking but a supervisor will say it is.

Problem is the supervisor thinks "omg instead of doing that ON COMPANY TIME! you could start the next project and get it done quicker!"

This mindset is absolute failure as it causes burnout and a good employee to say fuck you to your company.

Yet, you could have just had a guy who did his work well and on time and just swallowed your pride that between project he "slacks off" cause that allows him to stay healthy mentally and physically to make the next project come on time.

Tell your brother this and watch as he fumbles his words.

remote work opposition from executives is:

50% management not knowing how to manage via slack and being overused to "walking the halls" and preferring their staff change rather than they change because they're not used to low unemployment environments (and not wanting to appear useless to their own supervisors)

25% management enjoying the experience of lording power over workers by enforcing in-person interactions and/or creating the above mentioned stockholm syndrome in workers that prevents quitting due to salary

25% awareness of the real need for in-person mentoring relationships that expand a staff member's career capability and/or work that must be done in person (hands-on lab work, classified work, trade secrets that cannot just be sent over encrypted email)

Tim Cook's been giving the same memo to Apple employees. Google too.

Some of it has the energy of "we spent a gajillion bucks on fancy work campuses and now we look stupid with it empty, so stop embarrassing us or you're fired."

The rest is def the weird control fetish over your employees.

Many long term commercial leases go for 10-20 years plus. I guarantee you that more and more companies will be changing their tune when leases expire and renewals are up.

Our company restructured ours in 2019. So come 2025-30 I fully expect the cultural shift at that time will be to cull back space and move more and more toward 100% remote work. None of this is coincidental, and its a matter of time, really.

His complaint was that they werent getting the work done. Now this doesnt apply to everyone. I think he was referring to a single person at the time. Its one of the reasons why theyre starting to go back to the office. Again he is pro work from home.

Usually bosses who are

1. Not easy going at all
2. Have high expectations and expect you to work as long as they do
3. micromanaging
4. Have very old fashioned/outdated views on work culture
5. Not very flexible but expect you to be
6. kiss ass to upper management and won't defend you but will stab you in the back
7. Not professional and will berate you
8. overall shit managers with no interpersonal skills

My last job's boss. Fuck that
