To touch on these...while ABCs of Death is considered a horror film, and they often sought out horror directors, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone was actually told to make a horror film, right? I believe the assignment was just to make a short film involving death that fit with the assigned letter. Most people did default to horror, but there were still a bunch that didn't.

Yeah, sorry, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt here and assuming his sole intention wasnt just juvenile shock value. There are a lot here that arent horror but they have a clear vision or point to the work.

It almost feels too real compared to most of this stuff.

Like I think this point you made is really good, especially if hes just using someone having a miscarriage for shock value. Maybe there are places that would work but it isnt out of nowhere sandwiched between shorts with a squeaky magical poo and masturbation contests to the death.

Like beyond being lazy it feelstasteless? I guess is the word Id go with. Like shocking but in a really lazy way. Someone standing up and shouting titties! during a funeral.

I guess it's hard to know without knowing his intention, but also, I dunno. I don't really see anything wrong with adding something that is realistic for their assignment. I absolutely agree with your "forgetting to do your homework assignment", because it's probably the most or 2nd most half-assed one, but I also sort of liked the tone shift of being something kind of dark in a pool of everything being over the top. I definitely personally wouldn't use the phrase juvenile shock value for his, especially with all the other things here that fit that, even if he was attempting to shock, he didn't exactly do it in a juvenile way I don't think; he just showed death. If people find it tasteless for being too relatable and common, then do they also have a problem with Speed featuring a drug death, or Nexus feature a car accident? I give some credit to Miscarriage for almost subverting expectations, because you are looking for something over the top, and then you get hit with something mildly depressing. Though you can analyze the woman's reaction during that short, and wonder what's going through her head to get your own story out of it.

I never saw Miscarriage as juvenile, just lazy. If West had added some meaningful story beats and other details, this one could've had enough nuance to be interesting.

Yeah, theres definitely different ways to look at this and this is all just my personal opinion of course with no judgment directed at people who think otherwise.

But, again, to me those two are linked here. There are certain subjects (suicide, miscarriages, stuff in that vein) where a thoughtless approach is almost inherently tasteless.

It is a whole bunch of nonsense masquerading as art and I feel like if I tried to make a parody movie of someone making a pretentious short art film, I couldnt do a better job than this.

This feels like both a Lady Gaga music video and a revenge torture porn made as a commentary of the sex industry. It's pretty nicely shot, but it's just too short and we don't really get much in the way of narrative or emotional climax.

The idea of a group of creepy, rapey filmmakers getting punished by a demonic entity is interesting. Having the climax of the film take place in a jumbled mess of seizure-inducing shots is not interesting. I dont get to see the comeuppance due to the strobe effects, and as such, the whole ending loses any value.

As soon as we see her eyes, I started getting vibes from that first segment in V/H/S with the succubus and I was 100% in. But then the ending came along and just vomits all over everything everywhere. Theres just no subtlety or build up after that and it goes from 0 to penis explosion in half a second. It was like the director knew they wanted bad things happen to all the bad guys but didnt quite figure out how to get from A to B so the reveal is a huge mess. The first half is genuinely uncomfortable and all these gross leering men are standing around doing gross leering men things and youre waiting for their comeuppance. But the form that takes is an EDM video where you cant see whats going on and also there might be penises but it isnt quite clear because the rave going on is too discombobulating. Also the voice they give for the girl when she talks is the most cringe inducing thing in this entire compilation.

Hm interesting. It doesn't change my perspective really but this all makes sense. Fun we have at least one person here that likes this style because its definitely at least unique compared to almost everything else in the compilations.

I'm also still looking through my list to see which of these I ranked really low was number one until Johnbobb added two more lists at the very end. I have it narrowed down to two, I think? Still surprised either of these would be number one but it basically has to be something in my bottom 35 or so...right? Unless the other slacker list maker was responsible for that much of a drop by themselves.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark but shit

Spider-pervert, spider-pervert, watching some dude masturbate. I dont know what the CGI budget was for each of these directors, but Im going to guess it is at the level of probably shouldnt try to use CGI. There arent enough sarcastic air quotes in the world to properly frame the actor here, and somehow his performance is less realistic than the spider that looks like it was put together using MS Paint and sadness. The spiders crawling out of his ear at the end isnt scary and again just looks really bad with what the CGI was. Ugly, bland, and uninteresting just isnt a good combo.

Uh, based on the sound design I thought it would be a comedic one, but it's neither here nor there. The ending is pretty good since it speaks to a common fear but that's it. Also the guy's acting is not the greatest, so to speak.

I dont care about filmmaking or story or anything in this one. I fucking hate spiders. The opening scene where he goes to squish it and loses sight of it is TERRIFYING to me, and I hated this and the ending jump scare.

This one started off ok. Wait, no it didnt, I forgot the actual start was that terrible cartoon. But there is like a thirty second span I kind of liked where the one guy is talking about a walrus attacking the city and the other guy is angrily yelling at him for being an idiot. There is a meta element to this, which is kind of a problem because Q is for Quack comes before it and does a much better job with the concept than this ever had the chance to. But after that this becomes borderline unwatchable and I mean that in a literal sense. I dont have seizures but Im afraid anyone in a one block radius with epilepsy mightve had one due to second hand exposure. This is what happens if Q is for Quack was made by someone that developed paranoid schizophrenia halfway through making it. The last minute and a half or so are just random images flashing on the screen with no sense of directorial precision and looks like a director just threw up ideas all over an 8mm film. Really poorly shot, poorly acted, horrendous special effects, and just a mess all around. A couple of laughs and a shot of an old person being pushed off a cliff save this from the absolute bottom for me.

Ugh wow this genuinely made me feel like I was suffocating.

I think that, if watching seriously, this is a short that really shows the limitations of the concept. It is well shot and effectively brutal and you can tell the director is competent. But it is hard to pull off any more than that. Youre essentially just watching a death with no context here, a snuff film and nothing else. The director got the death right but he winds up being one of the few that really doesnt put anything around it. It is hard to get me interested in something that limited and even if I can tell things are well down, straightforward stuff like this is not going to be memorable in the least. I watched this a couple times now and barely remembered this one, as well put together as it was.

this I think really suffered for a lack of knowing what the intention and audience for the film as a whole are going to be. This is arguably TOO dark, almost like they were trying to make it as a PSA about real marital abuse, but even then it's a total misstep.

I watched this short film less than three hours ago and I have absolutely no memory of it. That should earn it an automatic F, but let me read the Wikipedia summary real quick and give it a fair chance
Oh, okay. This is the one where the woman in the bathtub becomes a human scratch-off ticket. Yeah, this didnt work for me. The setup has been done a kazillion times, and nothing about the execution wowed me. F

I dont know what the title has to do with the movie, but this was just gross and came across as torture porn with a character too dumb to even remove a gag from her own mouth when her hand was free.

G is for motion sickness holy shit. I dont know if the head cam adds anything here other than it was probably super easy for them to shoot and didnt require them to do any of the difficult cinematography. I actually thought it wasnt completely horrible outside of that though. The ending shot of the surfboard bobbing straight up in the water is pretty haunting, and I think the concept here is a clever one. Just wished it was actually filmed in a better way. It is also perhaps the most predictable of the group, and I knew exactly where it was going as soon as they showed the bricks in the trunk.

For a short, this one really wasnt well-defined enough. I had to watch it twice to understand that hed laden himself with bricks to drown. Im sorry, but youve gotta give me more than that, movie.

It's very simple but I do like it. The first person POV set it apart and I do personally find deep waters terrifying, so that was pretty effective. I wouldn't really call it gravity though but...ok.

Okay, I probably overlooked something with this one. When I watched it, I was waiting for a plot to develop or a character to appear, but nothing happened. It just abruptly ended. Im sure someone else will point out its brilliant symbolism or clever directorial intent, but I was already forgetting this underwater odyssey before it concluded. F
