You're right that someone would just replace Putin, but his replacement may be more pragmatic tham him. Face it, all of this is pretty much Putin desperately wanting to be remembered. I think someone else would find an excuse to stop the war, this really isn't benefiting anyone in Russia right now. The ideal scenario would of course be to get rid of all the dictators, but the good enough one is having Putin replaced by someone who sees the political value of fucking off.
