Police fatally shot an armed person at a summer sports camp just outside of Dallas on Monday, authorities said. No children were harmed during the incident.

Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls at 8:43 a.m. CDT that a person with a gun was inside the Duncanville Fieldhouse, where more than 150 children were attending camp, Duncanville police representative Michelle Arias told reporters.

Officers arrived in two minutes, entered the building and looked for that armed individual, according to Arias.

"Officers located a subject armed with a gun and engaged the subject," Arias said. "The subject was struck (by gunfire)."

Officers rendered medical assistance and that person was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead there, police said.

No children were injured and they were cleared from the building and being reunited with parents at the nearby Duncanville Recreation Center, authorities said.

Monday's incident unfolded nearly three weeks after a gunman broke into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, about 350 miles southwest of Duncanvile, and killed 19 children and two teachers.

Police in that Texas community are under intense scrutiny for their immediate response. The killer remained in a locked classroom with victims for more than an hour before a tactical unit from federal law enforcement entered and fatally shot the gunman.

And nearly one month ago, a white gunman motivated by hate and dressed in tactical gear killed 10 people at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood in western New York, officials said.

Before suspect Payton Gendron, 18, opened fire at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, he is alleged to have posted a 180-page document revealing plans to attack Black people while citing the racist great replacement theory which falsely says white Americans are being supplanted by nonwhite people through immigration, interracial marriage and, eventually, violence.

This article is weird, because it makes it seem like the dude was armed but not really threatening, just casually strolling around? Isn't Texas one of the few places where you can open carry?

If the guy is armed what's the problem?

Isn't it his right in Texas to openly carry a gun? Are you not allowed to open carry and pick up your kids? Can you not open carry and walk around in a school? I don't get it.

Generally, to carry a handgun in public in Texas without an LTC, a person must:

• Be at least 21 years old
• Not have a prior felony conviction as described in Texas Penal Code Section 46.04
• Not have a recent conviction for certain types of misdemeanors as described in Texas Penal Code Sections 46.02 and 46.04
• Not be subject to an unexpired protective order as described in Texas Penal Code Section 46.04(c)
• Not be restricted from possessing a firearm under federal law as described in 18 United States Code Section 922(g)
• Not be intoxicated, except in certain situations as described in Texas Penal Code Section 46.02(a-6)

If the guy is not violating any laws, technically he can walk around a school with a gun openly, right?

Sec. 46.03. PLACES WEAPONS PROHIBITED.
(a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly possesses or goes with a firearm, location-restricted knife, club, or prohibited weapon listed in Section 46.05(a):
(1) on the physical premises of a school or educational institution, any grounds or building on which an activity sponsored by a school or educational institution is being conducted, or a passenger transportation vehicle of a school or educational institution, whether the school or educational institution is public or private, unless:
(A) pursuant to written regulations or written authorization of the institution; or
(B) the person possesses or goes with a concealed handgun that the person is licensed to carry under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, and no other weapon to which this section applies, on the premises of an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education, on any grounds or building on which an activity sponsored by the institution is being conducted, or in a passenger transportation vehicle of the institution;

There's a lot of places you can't carry openly. Most of them obvious places.

Alright, according to the above law you can't openly carry, but you CAN carry concealed IN the school. So if they found out he had a gun and it was concealed, it WAS his legal right to do so.

I learned a lot that open carry doesn't really mean much outside of you get to go to a grocery store with your gun. IF THERE IS NO ALCOHOL IN THE STORE. Can't open carry while drunk either.

Regardless, did they have to shoot the guy? I mean it sounds like the response was extreme, this is a school, if you can just cuff the guy and get him out of the school without murdering a guy who was strolling around with a (possibly concealed which is legal apparently with my limited googling) gun in front of a bunch of kids that's much better. But if he was waving it around threatening kids I get it. But the article doesn't say that. Shit reporting TBH. Not clear what happened.

Sec. 46.13. MAKING A FIREARM ACCESSIBLE TO A CHILD. (a) In this section:
(1) "Child" means a person younger than 17 years of age.
(2) "Readily dischargeable firearm" means a firearm that is loaded with ammunition, whether or not a round is in the chamber.
(3) "Secure" means to take steps that a reasonable person would take to prevent the access to a readily dischargeable firearm by a child, including but not limited to placing a firearm in a locked container or temporarily rendering the firearm inoperable by a trigger lock or other means.
(b) A person commits an offense if a child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm and the person with criminal negligence:
(1) failed to secure the firearm; or
(2) left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access.
(c) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under this section that the child's access to the firearm:
(1) was supervised by a person older than 18 years of age and was for hunting, sporting, or other lawful purposes;
(2) consisted of lawful defense by the child of people or property;
(3) was gained by entering property in violation of this code; or
(4) occurred during a time when the actor was engaged in an agricultural enterprise.
(d) Except as provided by Subsection (e), an offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
(e) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor if the child discharges the firearm and causes death or serious bodily injury to himself or another person.

This one is funny, you can give a completely unloaded gun to a kid and it's ok. It's also just a misdemeanor TO YOU if your kid kills someone else.

Class A Misdemeanor: Penalties include a fine of no more than $4,000 and/or up to 1 year in a county jail. Examples of Class A misdemeanors include burglary of a vehicle, theft of property valued at $750 but less than $2,500.

I don't get it, it feels like a feel good moment as a knee jerk reaction to Uvalde in texas? They note how proud they are to react in 2 minutes.

They say the word "shooting" but it sounds one sided and no one was hurt. But yet "multiple" 911 calls were made. They "engaged" with the armed man, they fired shots and he was killed and they administered first aid.

I get nothing from this reporting. What the guy's intent. What the 911 calls were exactly about. Calling 911 on a dude entering what appears to be a mall seems meaningless.

It's so odd now how things are currently, it's just pieces of news I have to go out of my way to search for in order to make sense of something that doesn't make any sense. It's getting old for big profile cases like this. All it takes is one guy googling multiple different news sources (preferably local) to find out wtf is going on.

If he opened carry there it makes sense. But it sounds like everyone is scared about Uvalde, saw a guy with a gun and started calling 911. I really want to hear the 911 transcript or recordings to see if this kind of reaction is warranted. It's just so odd that cops come in on a report hearing a guy with a gun in a mall apparently and start "exchanging gunfire." Those initial 911 calls must have set up the situation.

Things are starting to make sense now. So a guy walks into a mall and starts firing. It's a sports complex. It's possible he was at an indoor range. But now things make sense. I wonder why he shot blindly instead of...like at someone. People are weird. Seems like this is about as much info as we'll get.

I wonder if he's one of those guys who strap carry a AR15 around thinking "it's my 2A right" well you dead now son, police shoot first and ask questions later.

Theres a slight chance they overreacted in both cases. You can legally open carry a long gun as long as it is slung over the shoulder in a non ready position. If the gun is in your hands then that is brandishing and warrants immediate attention from police. The articles do not say if the perps were brandishing or not, but that wasnt smart on their part to carry rifles when police are recently scrutinized over shooting response.

The suspect fired at least two shots while inside the Duncanville Fieldhouse, police say, but there were no injuries to students or staff members.
During a news conference Monday afternoon, police said the suspect, who has not yet been identified, entered the building through the main lobby and encountered a staff member. According to police, there was some sort of conversation between the two that led to the suspect firing off one shot.
The staff member involved was not injured, police said.
Police said the suspect then tried to go into a classroom but was unable to due to the door being locked. The suspect fired one shot into the classroom, which had children inside, according to police. None of the children were injured.

Sounds like they had a reason to start blasting as soon as they saw the guy. I'd like to speculate more but I doubt we'll get a reason why the dude started getting violent. Maybe his own kid was in class and he wanted him out. Doesn't make sense why you s tart shooting oh well.
