For covid? Not in any meaningful way. For future pandemics, surely if it's warranted.

Smallpox is likely to show up again, and they stopped vaccinating for that in 1980.

After how well we did this time around? Almost just wanna say why bother, more people would be dropping precautions after COVID and the last couple years. I feel like the public response would be a lot weaker.

I doubt we'll have a crisis of that magnitude anytime soon, but if we do, I'm pretty sure many will not take it seriously, just like now.

It's almost guaranteed to happen eventually, and I imagine this kind of issue will become more prevalent as permafrost layers melt and release viruses that havent been seen since the dinosaurs.

This, pretty much. Although I'd also imagine that with the advances and evidence gained during covid in relation to mRNA vaccines, we'll get on top of future ones much quicker.

Problem there is that with covid most of the groundwork had already been laid by their work with SARS.
If something truly unexpected comes around we will be a lot worse off.

We personally may or may not see another like it in our lives. But it's gonna happen again to humans at some point

There wasn't really any capacity to mass-manufacture MRNA vaccines, or create new ones quickly, prior to covid, though. Nor did we know for sure if they'd be effective in a real-world scenario. That's a big difference now. Doesn't solve every problem, but it will make a huge difference I'd expect.

this. back then half the country shut down. the other half decided to have a high death count and a good chunk of the population got sick.
