They would have been perfect if not for the motion controls for throwing and that knocks it down to an 8/10 for me otherwise.

I was really disappointed that they never released an update with traditional controls because throwing was really unintuitive. A lot of people shared videos on it just not working on their setup.

No idea if this is because unlike the Wii and Wii-U there's no sensor bar or what

So the game flow is mostly the same. Same areas and events as Yellow, with some extra stuff here and there (but no slot machines).

Battles are Pokemon Go style, but honestly, it isnt bad. It makes dumb random battles better, and you dont need to worry about KOing rare Pokemon either. I actually liked it.

Anyway, they are good . They arent packed with content, and the only postgame is Mewtwo, fighting Green, and Pokemon Master battles (where you battle someone with the same Pokemon, one on one. Kind of interesting).

Fuck no. The forced motion controls make them unplayable. They also force you to play on easy mode in various ways. You can't even attempt Pewter Gym unless you have a Grass or Water-type with you.

The only nice thing I can say about these games is that they look pretty and that you can have your pokemon follow you. Or even ride them in the case of larger ones.

I thought you could use button controls in handheld?

Yeah, but some of us like to play in docked mode. Especially when we're recording or streaming.

Also the fixed wild battles (Snorlax, birds, etc) are really dumb. You have the standard battle system with a time limit (not turn limit) to get them down to 0. Then you have to do the dumb motion control catching anyway.

The game is overall a faithful remake of Pokemon Yellow, with Kanto redesigned in a beautiful 3D environment. The two biggest complaints that often surround the game are the catching mechanic (it uses the Pokemon Go mechanic that many people don't like) and the fact that your starter Pikachu/Eevee is OP, making an easy game easier. Personally, I don't think either of these are enough to detract from the positive qualities of the game (and honestly, I grew to like the catching mechanic; was a nice change of pace from the same old).

Here are some positives of the game, since people tend to only focus on the negatives:
  • You are basically playing through the original game in 3D. Narratively and visually, it is a faithful adaptation of the original games
  • Pokemon roam outside in the overworld, making Kanto feel much more alive and active. You can also choose whether you want to encounter the pokemon or avoid it entirely. I never realized how much better Pokemon is without random encounters.
  • The Pokemon in your party can follow you. Another delightful mechanic where you can have your favorite pokemon follow you around, each with their own unique animation that adds their individual personalities. It's so satisfying to see a Sandslash rolling around behind you like Sonic or Metapod bouncing or Jigglypuff floating like a balloon. Some pokemon you can even ride on for flying, riding, and surfing like Charizard, Rapidash, and Gyarados.
  • Shinies are easier to find, chain, and catch. You can tell they are shiny from the overworld, making it so much easier to find them without having to join endless battles. They also appear more often under certain conditions.
  • Type additions- You get to play the original games but with Dark, Steel, and Fairy types added. So basically modernized some but still enjoyable to play
  • You get exp for catching pokemon. This was a much-needed change. It sucked that defeating pokemon or trainers was the only way to level up. This actually encouraged you to catch more pokemon as a way to level up.
  • There's coop in this game, so far the only released mainline game or remake to have it. It isn't much, and I doubt most people used it, but I did and it was fun. A second player can explore the overworld with you and join you in the battles. The only downside is it makes battles too easy because they become 2 vs 1 in stead of 1 vs 1. But still a fun social experience.

This is sort of correct. You can aim using the gyro in the handheld and then hit a button to catch the pokemon. Some found it to be more enjoyable.

Catching was intuitive in handheld mode that's true, but I prefer docked myself.

I had fun with it as sort of a basic nostalgia trip and collectathon. It's not at all difficult unless you want to grind 150 Pokemon for the optional high level challenges, but that'd be more tedious than hard. If you want a good Pokemon game, I'd say no, but it's a good Pokemon experience.

Can you catch or evolve to all original 150 Pokemon? Is Mew available? I've considered getting one or the other just for a relaxing game but not sure.

Also...Is Eevee able to evolve, and/or can you get more than the Eevee you start with?

Bosses are immune to the eat command so it won't be possible to end the final boss fight of the game by eating it.

They are, biggest problem people have outside the controls is that its not a FRLG remake and that has always been a really dumb complaint.

Mew was only available with the pokeball accessory that came with the special edition. You cannot evolve your starter, but you can catch more.
