In my head Tachi is perpetually 'my fifth favourite Neotokyo track'. It doesn't actually matter what the tracks above it are, though I think I've assumed the top three to be fairly static-- Imbrium, Footprint, Tin Soldiers. (Depending on when you asked, fourth could have been Impetus, Carapace, or maybe a couple other choices.)

The point is that Tachi has always been reliably one of the tracks from this soundtrack I've listened to very extensively-- hundreds of full plays-- that I've liked very much, but never my favourite.

Neotokyo was a soundtrack I first encountered through the board 8 vgm community, probably through Ed Bellis (who I think ran into it on the gamingforce forums), at around the time I was starting a new job. This became what I'd typically listen to on long bus rides back home from work, and stayed that way for years; it, along with NieR and Shatter, basically define my 2010 VGM listening experience. It remains, probably, my favourite VGM soundtrack. I question whether that b2 up there should be a b1 in actuality. It's hard to figure out even something as general as tiers for such immediately familiar music, as I just don't often think about it in those terms.

I often like to imagine Neotokyo music as being the backing music for the exploits of a very hardboiled cyberpunk detective. Tachi fits that mold really well-- the bass and piano, and later the voice samples, lay out an immediate feeling of a setting at night, dark alleyways and neon lights. It's steady, even quiet at moments, like at 0:59, moments of deep investigative focus. When the big guitar moment kicks in-- revelation, sudden action. 2:20 has the feeling of a strange encounter, our detective finding themselves in a place that's bizarre and foreign to them, and to us as viewers. It feels so easy to imagine things to this music, images and scenes, and that's what brings me back to this soundtrack, why I never get sick of it, and why a version of me twelve years ago would listen to this after a tiring day at work and still smile, dreaming of these places.

The sound set of ffmc always stands out to me; i always remember what it sounds like but not what the music is melodically(actually my memory is more timbre-centric than melody-centric so this makes sense)

Today I was listening to astaroth battle from shadow hearts covenant from a CD in the car while i was playing simultaneously my brothers pokemon go and my own pokemon go on both of our phones at the same time while my brother was driving around (you shouldnt drive at the same time as playing pokemon go that was why i was playing both of ours at once) at strategic locations to get pokemon stops. And when i was listening to that song i said so many good things enthusiastically about that song(astaroth battle); this song reminds me of that song, i am so glad for that. Yasunori mitsuda is a genius(definition of genuis: makes things that make me happy)

On this listen: i just realized that the muted trumpet sound was something i had been interpreted as being a distorted human voice this entire time. Thats a pretty amazing thing to be able to say about the unique way that they managed to get that instrument to sound i think. Ed harrison is so good at making c ool sounds all around this; all these sounsd morph in subtle ways it is so great. I wish this match was closer for me than it was,,,or that i c ould vote for this in some way, but i will show my support by saying nice things about the song out loud with my voice in real life

Healthy Unicorn Girl 7.5 There's some deadly and sinister vibes to this. some of the instruments make it sound like alien outer space or something. I also kinda like the weird prog progressions, reminding me of PSO2 but like good ahah. It's not so random that it's absolute gibberish, I can still pick apart a main melody to it.

Battle 2 7.5 Midi guitars cast out magical sounds of greatness while the drums blast a heavy downpour. There's just something succinct and energizing about this that I love. I think maybe it being a tad longer would help keep from the repetitiveness, but the overall loop is very solid.

Wicked Child 9.2 This is one of my favorite songs ever. I could listen to this for an hour and not get bored. While the loop is short, every single second has this perfection in its vibe and energy. I don't even really hvae the words to describe how I like it so much. It's just so infectious in making me groove along. The build up has this "running towards a final boss" vibe and then it hits you with the main hook. The ostinato in the main part is so cool , how it bounces along playfully but with such conviction. and some of those notes are reflected in the following sections and aaaah it's so good.

Contrattacco Emotional Overload 6.5 This has the same frenzy as something I'd hear in an intense MMO or maybe xenoblade. There are a ton of layered instruemnts all buildng and reacting off each other, it's very cool. But I think it lacks a solid hook that really brings everything together. The high harp/ringing and compressed guitars are my favorite.

Battle with the Devil 6.5 Celtic Hell is an appropriate genre. When those accordian/strings come in with full force, I can just feel the scotish or irish culture bursting forth (idk countries) I wasn't really feeling the slower sections or the prolonged vocals, but I suppose they provide a good contrast to the more busy and upbeat sections.

Tachi 7 The alternating pitches in the vocals, like clockwork are a favorite, they mezmerize my ears like a hynotist. I don't know if I really cared for the second part with its intense rock storm. It seems a bit like risk of rain tracks in that vibe, which I knoow others connect with becasue of the journey and atmosphere, but it's not my all time favorite thing. Still has a good mood that enrapturs me and brings me into this wicked world of demons and chaos.
