For those that don't know, Hulk Hogan defended the title against Andre the Giant. Ted Dibiase paid the referee to screw Hulk out of the title and Andre gave the title to Red afterwards. Ted was recognized as the WWE champion immediately afterwards and even defended it once. retroactively this was never counted as a title reign, but Andre's was. ... Copied to Clipboard!

That is the explanation they went with. Andre won the belt in a contest. Andre's forfeiture was recognized as relinquishing the belt, but forfeiting it specifically to Ted DiBiase was not recognized. ... Copied to Clipboard!
