She is expected to recover but this will change her entirely, her mother and sister were both killed in the attack. The reason they were attacked? The perpetrator had a romantic interest in one of the girls and finally snapped when the feelings were not returned. This event has changed not only the life of her family, but everyone who knows them as they were some of the nicest people I have ever met. Buddha said suffering is caused by desire, either a desire to have what you don't have already OR to eliminate/get rid of what already exists. There's more to it than just that. Clinging and attachment are also contributing factors toward a person's suffering or "dissatisfaction" in life.
