Making assumptions isnt a good idea. Atreus is for the Norse stuff. Kratos is the character people care about.

If I was just starting out the series, I would probably play 1, 2 and maybe 3. Apparently Ghost of Sparta is pretty solid too.

Freya's biggest crime is that she's overprotective. And the sequel may change things, but no one in the first game had a bad word to say about Tyr.

You get more context and some scenes resonate more, but you'll be fine with just the general idea of who he is.

One or two scenes won't have context, but they honestly felt more spliced in to make it feel less like they took an original game and just called it God of War.

The whole game is based in that premise: he's an awful father, but is learning and trying.

Of course I have a suspicion that the kid isn't his. He's Loki trying to hide from Ragnarok behind a guy that can commit deicide by going "I'm your son".

Smh I can think of at least things scenes that deal with Kratoss past.

• Kratos discovers the urn in Tyrs area
• Atheana showing up when Kratos goes to retrieve the BoC
• Kratos seeing Zues in Hel
• Kratoss hatred of all gods
• The bleeding scars on Kratoss arms that he hides.
• The mere fact that Kratos is a foreign god and how that relates to Atreus.

Just play it. Anything you dont understand can be easily explained here or through a 5 minute search. Even less if you know of the character in any way.

Atreus is also an asshole, he's just more low-key about it.

Kratos is mostly a shitty person and a bad father, but a lot of male gamers don't care because he's fucked multiple women at a time and brutally murders godlike beings. The large majority of Kratos in the God of War series is western white male power fantasy personified.
