The fact that the United States is the most powerful and most technologically advanced country in the world - yet still charges hundreds if not thousands for Insulin, Dialysis, etc is hilarious and just goes to show how fucked up this country is.

I'd say "we can't pay prisoners for their labor during a historic budget surplus because it'd cost too much money" is pretty objectively evil. Aside from that, he's a pretty good governor. But that's a big "aside from that."

Cause it doesn't seem to helpful if someone from Kentucky is saying the governor from California is evil because of his stance on prison slave labor when his own governor endorses the same shit and he also can't point out a different governor that disagrees with that stance.

idk I think every politician is all in for cheap domestic prison labor but okay sure that, and Cali's development issues(ie. homeless crisis) is all I'm familiar with but yet at the same time isn't he addressing some other noble issues that otherwise the rest of America doesn't want to go out of its comfort zone to pull off?

Not if they do the shitty thing of making it so their record as a felon prevents them from getting those kinds of jobs once they get out, like what happened for all of the people that learned how to be firefighters while in prison.

Also having prisoners who are paid pennies on the dollars doing work helps suppress wages.

Yeah nvm, he said they can make it close to at cost, I was thinking it said sell them at cost. But even that wouldn't necessarily give an exact number.

NPR reports the use of inmate labor saved the state $100 million a year. (For reference, Zip Recruiter estimates that a non-convict firefighter makes nearly $100 a day, due to the danger and rigors of the job).

Incarcerated workers in California and other states are not classified as employees. They cant get unemployment, sick leave or paid time off. The pay scale is set by state law, with many jobs paying 8 cents an hour and the CALPIA jobs paying more from 35 cents to $1 an hour.

It's a problem because the people who are going into severe debt, or who are skipping doses in order to make their supply last longer, aren't the ones buying the generic brands available at Wal-Mart. Insulin is tricky and there are a bunch of different kinds and formulations, and not all types work for every person, and even something as simple as switching between kinds can cause all kinds of nasty side effects for people with diabetes. The really expensive insulins don't have a generic version yet because they are still under patent protection, which is why the companies who make them can jack up the price so much in the first placethey have a literal monopoly on their specific type of insulin and anyone who needs that kind can either pay the price, or fuck off and die.
