My guess is that he was either in shock or he had some janky homemade and/or 3d printed gun that couldn't really fire that many shots and knew he could do anything else.

Although it's also used to make themselves when commiting a crime.

Are there shells? People have reporting a good deal of smoke, which indicates black powder. I figure he just loaded black powder & shot into the gun, similar to an old school musket, then used electronic current (the wire around the gun) to ignite it. Points for creativity I guess.

Was told ball bearings were used. So likely he had to use some to house them.

He probably built some shells as well. The smoke is probably just the material he used for the shells casing being burnt up.
