I just recently beat Yakuza 6 to close out the Kiryu saga, I'm about 50 hours into Yakuza 7 and I am 20 hours into Judgment.

God I'm so addicted. I would love to do a write up on all games 0 - 6 that I beat and my opinions on the ranking but it was over the course of the past couple years so I am sure I would mess things up on the earlier games that I can't remember.

I've read that some of the larger long-running series such as Warcraft and Elder Scrolls actually employ lore experts to make sure new games aren't contradicting old ones, and I feel that Cyric could play this role for the Yakuza series

That fight was the only wall I hit but hot damn was it a wall with the first time. It was so difficult I was almost convinced it was supposed to be one of those fights you are supposed to lose. I came back the 2nd time and destroyed though. I wouldn't say I grinded a lot though.

I can't shake the feeling there'd be too little replay value or they wouldn't hold up so I don't really want to play them but every now and then curiosity about the series does surface.

I pretty much beat them all back to back. I started 0 in 2019 then beat that then went straight to K1 and K2. Took a break after K2 I think since I was waiting on the Steam release for Y3-Y5 although I almost caved and got the PS4 edition since I got tired of waiting, but luckily the Steam release was announced shortly after. I then beat Y3-Y6 then moved on to LAD. Can't remember if I beat LAD this year or around Christmas time.

I remember thinking after beating Y3 that I'd play other games first so I wouldn't get burnt out, but started Y4 immediately after seeing the credits of Y3 just so I could see what the game looks like since it had new playable characters. Immediately got sucked in since I immediately liked Akiyama lol.

The only real fatigue I had was going through Y5 since it's massive. Took a while to get through. But surprisingly enough, I started Y6 right afterwards and felt renewed lol. And since I love JRPGs, LAD was extremely fun too.

This is basically exactly what happened to me. Though, I got K1 first on sale and was enjoying it. Technically, I bought Y3 on the PS3 many years ago, but the game didn't resonate with me. I didn't "get" it. Then I got K1 and it clicked and holy shit it might be the one series I've played dozens and dozens and dozens of hours in the past couple years. After K1 I went to 0, K2, then all the way from 3 -> 6.

I also agree that 5 was where I finally burnt out. It's just...too big. There is far, far too much stuff in it. By the time I hit Haruka's idol section I broke. It stopped me dead in my tracks for a long long while. Finally pushed through it and rushed to the end, then just recently beat 6. I thought 6 was a real stellar return to a smaller story as opposed to the excess of 5. I think we may be the same person, btw. Your exact experience is basically mine verbatim. I also started Like a Dragon during my lull of 5 which hooked me pretty handily. Didn't beat it, but I'm on chapter 11 or so?

That's what happened to the guy I know who plays it. We were talking about Sega games, he said he liked Shenmue a lot, I said it kind of reminded me of Yakuza which we'd never played, he took a look and suddenly he's playing every game and even buying consoles to keep going. I don't know how this series does that to people.

I'd really rather have one solid game I can either get a crazy amount of mileage out of in one playthrough like FFX or ideally one I can keep replaying because because it can be all gameplay if you want it to be like VJ or DMC. I keep asking which one is the best and instead getting bullet point answers talking about his multiple favorites.

The one I'm watching now is the 1 remake. It looks very similar to 0 but they seem to have taken the playable Majima away so that's kind of a raw deal.

Kiwami 1 is imo the worst in the bunch. The story is the most relevant as it more or less sets the stage with a chunk of other plot points, but from a game standpoint it was the only one that pissed me off. The penultimate fight was the most absolute bullshit fights in the entire series. All of them. I hated it, hated it, hated it. You have to remember it is the earliest game in the series and they did a commendable job of updating it for Kiwami, but it is just light on content.

Kiwami 2 might be the game you want, tbqh. It has two cities like 0, but still only one character and only one combat style. But the engine is newer, I loved the story, it felt like a really awesome game and K2 is imo the best in the Kiryu saga. Lots of fun side content like hostess club managing and clan creator stuff, as well as the standard plethora of sub quests and minigames.

That sounds about right
They're all pretty long games if you want to do all the stuff. I wouldn't hold any single on up as being the clear best, but they all have memorable moments and characters, and following the story from start to finish feels like an odyssey. You even go back to the same city in every game (there are multiple cities) and it's really cool watching it transform over all those years.

If you decided to try out the series, play them in chronological order starring with 0. Its the one that I starred with and its still my favorite now after playing through all of them. All if the Yakuza games have a ton of content in them but something about the minigames and sub stories in that one really hooked me immediately and kept my full attention for 80 hours. If you dont enjoy 0 then you probably wont like any of them

I didn't get burned out running through all of them as they came out in rereleases and what not in the past several years, starting with Y0 right around the time the SBFP started their LP, which I stopped watching so I could play the game. But YMMV on that one - some people would definitely get burnt out.

Helps that I love Kamurocho and it's basically a character in its own right at this point so I don't mind it being reused over and over.

Y0 and FFX are around the same length and if you go for a completion run they're both over 100 hours.

Now that I'm thinking of Yakuza 7, this is a lot more pertinent. They also literally brought in a wrecking ball to try and break into the money counterfeit scheme and expose the triangle.

Yeah. I also feel like one my most beloved franchises was ripped away from me. I was open to it changing pace, but like you said, it carries all the worst parts of what it changed into. If people are enjoying it, it's whatever. But god damn, I do not see it. Story was still interesting. Which makes it suck even more that it's too much of a chore for me to get into. It fails as a turn based RPG imo. Could only make it 20 hours. One day I might try to tap into what people see in it. But literally no part of the turn based rpg aspect was fun for me. Scratch that, the costumes were fun.
