Not objects. Particles under certain conditions.

Spacetime itself is inflating like a balloon, which makes it seem like the distances between have increased faster than light.

Everything beyond 18 billion light years is simply unreachable even at the speed of light, as it will always be ahead of you even if you try to catch up after 18 billion light years. Basically 95% of the universe is out of reach.

Space is expanding faster than the speed of light.

What left 13 billion years ago, has moved further away by faster than light, which would include us, plus the time it took for it to reach here.

So by that, those distant objects are now about 30-46 billion years away now.
Okay thanks, this is a better explanation

Could someone explain to me why the released image isn't completely shining white?

I thought if one were to look deep enough into space, in any direction, there would be near an infinite amount of stars at various depths and distances, fully covering the entire spectrum of observation.

Just curious why that picture doesn't completely light up.

We still cant see far enough to see all the sources of light. Some of them are too far away and continue to move away so fast that we will never be able to see them because their light will never reach us.

Even with my extremely limited knowledge of astronomy, this is pretty cool. I can see a few spiral galaxies scattered around that pic; can you usually see them that clear, or is this a result of the Webb telescope's new tech?

As for the concept of light and distance, something that always helps my dumbass remember / conceptualize it is one of Dr. Manhattan's lines from Watchmen: 'All we ever see of stars are their old photographs.' (I like better the line where he describes a supernova scintillating, 'a wink intended for the trilobites, all long dead,' but I can't remember the exact quote off the top of my head).

Not sure there would by any since the picture is from 13 billion years ago. If they didnt invent FTL in 13 billion years and show up in our neighborhood then there isnt much to worry about.

Even if there are aliens out there, the chances of catching that are slim to none. It's like taking a random shot of the sky every week and trying to catch a plane crash.

None of this has any importance whatsoever. I don't understand why it's such a big deal.

These slightly higher-res pics of deep space wont benefit us in any way. It wont improve our current quality of life, it wont expedite the process of first contact/discovery, and its obvious at this point that humanity wont travel deep into space.

But hey, the pretty colorful nebulas and galaxies look slightly better.

Humanity wont explore space, discover FTL travel, colonize a celestial object or discover extraterrestrial life in any of our lifetimes, or even the lifetimes of people in succeeding generations.

And people a 100 years ago couldn't conceive of us having internet or air travel.

Ignorant take my dude this is a necessary step and the telescope is doing far far more than taking more clear pictures it's gathering more data to the unknown questions we couldn't solve prior.

And dismissing this achievement because you believe we won't live to see this new technology benefit us is a terrible way of looking at this. Try being more optimistic.
