https://gagadget.com/en/145360-the-european-union-will-require-all-new-cars-to-be-equipped-with-speeding-prevention-technology-by-2024/

Intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, is a new anti-speeding technology that will be used on every vehicle sold in the European Union. The EU regulation (part of the larger General Vehicle Safety Regulation) takes effect today, and it states that all new models and types of vehicles brought to the European market must have an ISA system. The policy does not apply to any current vehicles on display at least not yet. Every new car sold in the EU must have an anti-speeding device by July 2024.

The European Commission stated that the introduction of ISA was a "tremendous step forward for road safety" and has the potential to drastically reduce road traffic deaths and injuries. Now that car manufacturers have had time to adjust, they can capitalize on the potential offered by ISA for creating safer roads for all.

For those unfamiliar with ISA, it's a term that refers to a collection of technologies that may be used to detect road speed limits using front-mounted cameras, GPS data, or both. The technology can give reminder notifications about the speed limit, automatically adjust cruise control to match the road's speed, and even cut power to the engine to slow speeding vehicles, depending on the specific ISA and how it's set by the driver.

While the United States has yet to make a law that requires ISA, European drivers are already using it. According to EU-funded PROSPER's projections, a situation like this one, in which ISA is required, could result in between 26 and 50 percent fewer fatalities.

ISA technology, on the other hand, isn't flawless. During one test, the ISA system was "slow to react" and the speed limit was set at 60 mph while driving through a peaceful English village.

It better or it needs a manual on/off switch if there's no auto turn off feature.

It might work in Germany where they actually have a road budget and can afford nice roads. Not in other countries where you dont get speed signs or painted lines on the road and potholes go unfixed for years at a time. GPS based wont work at all since GPS is nowhere near live and accurate enough.

What will happen is a massive increase in accidents as these new cars get rear ended constantly by people already going 10+ over going into a new speed zone where the limit drops another 10 or so.

There should be a legally recognized & allowed 25% over the speed limit where you only get warned and not ticketed/fined if caught for the first time in 49.7 days.

That warning allowance will reset in 49.7 days.

If you want people to not speed, just put Speed & Traffic Violation Camera's at every sign facing towards you and away from you.

If you're caught speeding or violating basic Traffic rules, you get auto ticketed by the computer.

That would dramatically reduce the amount of speeders everywhere given how many signs you see.

Alberta Canada recently had a huge thing about photo radar.
End result: it does nothing to curb speeding or dangerous driving, and only exists as a money making tool for the government.

Right, the actual way to curb speeding is to design roads so that you physically cannot speed on them

I've never liked speed governors, there are places where you can legally speed to your hearts content.

Private Race Tracks where you rent time.
Private Roads.
Desert Salt Flats that are available to public use.

Having the government force a speed limit on everybody via technology is pointless & expensive.

Just be like other countries, set up speed Traps everywhere.

If you can see a sign, on the freeway, on regular roads; it'll have a speed camera facing you and when you bypass it, it'll have a speed camera mounted behind the sign, facing the opposite way to catch you speeding.

If you put enough speed traps everywhere, people will get the hint for those who are on the borderline who don't intend to speed.

Those who intend on speeding, not much you can do about them. They'll always find a way to rip out the Speed Governor or disable it.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Speed Limits drastically change by zone and road. And Machines aren't always apt to adjust to real world conditions that need faster than speed limit to keep up with the flow of traffic or slower than speed limit.

In California, the law has it that you need to keep up with the flow of traffic, even if they're going past the speed limit. So a Speed Governor would inherently violate that law if everybody is going 10 mph over the Speed Limit and your vehicle is forced to go slower and create a bottle neck that would most likely create a accident because you were going too slow.

I suppose an effective middle ground would be special licenses for autobahn, salt flats, etc. or having those vehicles only be legal for those situations or having speed cameras everywhere else.
You don't need a special license for those, trying to make it so that you have a "Special License" to use those facilities is just more bureaucracy and unnecessary IMO.

One things for sure - life isnt black and white, and just one solution doesnt solve everything. Plus, as mentioned, countries and attitudes differ - the EU is effectively safe at driving afaik despite having higher speeds available to them, much like how they dont have as many issues with alcohol on and off the road - the culture is simply different.
Learn to not be a dumb ass by NOT "drinking & driving".

Everybody can always find a way to have somebody else take you home.

If you don't, that's on you along with all the consequences of doing so.
